Ears Not standing up Hello, I am new to this forum, so I would like to introduce myself. I live in the Lodi California area and I have three adorable little yourkies. I just brought home my second little girl and she is 16 weeks old. Her ears have not stood up yet. Should I be concerned? Is there something that I should be doing to help. My other two yorkies' ears were up when I brought them home. Her name is Hannah and she will lift her ears when she is very interested in something. Any information and advise would be greatly appreciated. |
First of all, welcome to YT!!! You'll learn so much here! Now back to your question. Some Yorkies' ears stand up quickly and some never stand up. Does your baby have a lot of hair on her ears? Sometimes that can weigh them down. Sophie's ears were up when we got her, but right before her grooming I noticed that with the hair so long, they would droop a little at the tip, but once we got her ears tipped, she was fine. You can also tape their ears to get them to stand up, but I'm not really familiar with techniques. You can do a search and find some threads about it. But if I could add my personal opinion, Yorkies that I've seen who have the folded ears are so adorable!!!! I think they are cute either way! |
If it was me I would shave all the hair off the ears and tape. Here is one way to do it: http://www.keencanines.com/images/Ear%20Taping.pdf |
Help with Ears not standing up OMG!! How wonderful to have a community of thoughtful sharing persons. When I purchased Hannah her ears were standing up and when I traveled to Arizona to pick her up here ears were down. She has the most beautiful face and her confirmation looks good for her age. I will tape her ears and see if that helps with getting them back to standing up. Ther breeder said that she would take her back if her ears did not stand up, but I love everything about her and her personality is so sweet. Therefore I want to do what I can to get them to stand back up. I will let you know how it goes. I am so appreciative of your information. Thank you |
I Agree Some stainds up at first other can take more time |
Definitely keep them shaved and tape for 3 to 4 days at a time. It is just a means of forcing muscle control. Use masking tape. You may have to do it several times until they keep them up. Good luck. |
I've heard a few different things in the aspect of floppy ears on yorkies. Some take longer to stand up, especially if the tips of the ears aren't shaved. You could tape them if you wanted, but I really didn't ever care enough to, and my boys' ears are up now. Also, when a puppy is teething, all the calcium goes to the teeth, so the cartilage in the ears isn't built up or something, and it can cause the ears to flop back down, but once they're done teething, they'll go back up (my Tank's ears did that) Best of luck to you! |
I didn't think my dog's ears would stand up. She was getting 4 or 5 months old (don't remember exactly) and her ears were not up and hadcreases. The groomer said they were broken down and doubted if they would come up. I gave her herbal calcium and massaged them and tried taping them. One went up, so I just kept taping for a couple days and the other one went up, too. They look cute either way, tho. |
Ritzydaisy-I just have to say I love your avatar:cool: Jackie & my:littleang Sophie |
I reccomand taping them up for about 10 days, take it of then for a few days and if they are not up then tape it for 10 days again. If they don't come up then they are just dont coming up. Take the gray paper thing from a toiletpaperroll, cut it like the ears are shaped and so it fits perfect in the ears, than tape it too the ear. It's more likely that they get up if you do that :) Mine has floppy ears but i love him not any less for that! He's just cute with his litle floppy ears :p |
I have two Yorkies, and they are as different as night and day. Shiloh my male is the oldest and is what I lovingly call a "teapot" Yorkie (meaning he weighs about 7lbs), he has a fluffy cotton coat and floppy ears. Lorelei my baby is teeny tiny, at one year she weighs about 2lbs, has a silky coat and perked ears lol. I love them both for their different aspects and their personalities. When we first brought Shiloh home his ears were down, we did shave them and I attempted to tape them but he hated it so much I took it off immediately. Lorelei has always had perked ears. Shaving and taping may help them to come up, and also if she is teething it can cause them to droop down. Since her ears were up when you picked her from the litter my guess is that she is teething. Good luck with all your little lovelies and welcome to YT you will love it here, I know I do! :) |
