Itchy, scratchy, Pita Pita is constantly scratching, she has no fleas. There is no rash or hair loss but it's starting to drive us crazy. Is there a shampoo anyone uses or something I can use to give her some relief? Please help! |
I have the same problem.... Hi, I have the same problem with our Gigi, he was scratching every 10 min, i used many shampoo ,....... but finally I went to the vet. She told me that it could be a food allergy and she gave me aswell a special shampoo called "Allermyl Shampoo" produced by Virbac Salute Animale. Also, I need to feed him for 2 months with a special food from Hillīs diet, d/d lamb and rice. I canīt give him anythingelse, even an apple. After 2 months we need to go again to check how is he doing, so still 1,5 month to go.... My recomendation is, go to your vet as quick as you can. Take care, Patrizia and Gigi. |
We had this same problem with Ellie Mae.. She was scratching soo bad that she was pulling out hair.. I was getting pretty frustrated. I got some Tropiclean with oatmeal and also picked up some Missing Link. These together seem to have made a huge difference.. :) I also notice that her hair seems softer than before and it's growing back really well.. (We ended up shaving her :( ) |
Patrizia did u change her food too? What is Missing Link? |
Missing Link... Here is a site to check it out.. http://www.designinghealth.com/produ...ucts_main.html I bought mine at Petco.. :) |
Sorry Joy, I called you Patrizia before! I am going to Petsmart today so I will pickup some Missing Link and some Tropiclean, I'd rather not spend the money at the vet if I can solve the problem myself while she still has hair LOL! What do you feed Ellie Mae? I think the food that Patrizia was talking about is a prescription food. I hate to admit it but Pita's been eating Lil Caesar and I think that's where this is coming from. She also likes the Natural Balance Rolls so I think that's what we'll stick too. Thanks for your help! I hope I can get this cleared up without a vet visit! |
I had this problem for weeks, a few weeks ago, and even posted on it... BUt,,our solution was ,,, allergy I talked with my vet,and he said they were having so many calls and appt's for dogs itching,, He suggested giving 1cc of Baby Benodryl,, on his food, I did and the Itching stopped, so when he starts the itching I give him a little on his food and it stops.. you might wanna try it.. worth a shot,, check with your vet for amount. I used the cherry flavor. I had previously tried flea med, oatmeal shampoo, and nothing helped, so thats when I called the vet. |
OK I will buy some Baby Benadryl too... I am still changing her food tho' I think the crap in the Lil Caesar can't be good for her. I've been feeling guilty about giving it to her cuz I know it's not a great food but she eats it and she's sooo fussy! |
I have the same problem with Thor. I swithced him to California Natural food, at the suggestion of some YTers that it might have been his food but he didn't like the Cali. Natural. I think the kibbles were too hard. So now I have him on some new lamb and rice food that he loves, but the iching is still there. I also switched his shampoo to an oatmeal kind, but he is still itchy. The benadryl sounds like it is helping but I hate to put any meds in his body that aren't nessessary. I would love to know what alterantives Socalyorkie might beable to suggest. Hannah :) |
I have this problem really bad. I started giving Chloe Brewers Yeast vitamins from PetEdge. I just put a little cheese wiz on it and she eats it right up(I only give her 1/4 of a pill because it says 1 pill for every 10lbs). I also bathed her 4 days ago and used really good salon people conditioner on her( I still used cc ice on ice after the bath) and she hasnt been itching near as much this week and her skin and coat isnt as dry. SHe has actually stayed really soft so I think I am going to continue to use it on her. Its called Phyto Organics Babussa Mud by Nexus. |
I have the same problem with my miko. He scratches like crazy. I'm going today to buy some children's benandryl to see if this will do the trick, I have not taken him to the vet either, he's eating natural balance food, which I changed from Eukenaba. He does ( I have to admit) eat table food sometimes, But After today, when I give hime the benadryl I am not giving him anything at all to see if the scratching stops! It's drives me crazy to see him itch so much. His skin is not dry and he's on flea medication, so I don't know what else to do!!! |

Thanks :) |
I feed mine lil caesars as a treat everyday and have not itching problems. You might wanna try a shampoo with oatmeal in it and missing link supplement. You can get them both online at Dr fosters and Smith. |
I just know that Lil caesers is made with by products which could mean anything, and they use alot of fillers to make it taste good, my vet says it's like feeding them junk food. She just doesn't like anything else. I am in no way saying it's bad or bad for your dog! I just am repeating what I was told and I am just going to switch her to something more natural. Also with the lil caesers i buy a bunch of different flavors so there's no way for me to be sure which one, if any, give her a problem. I also live in on a small farm, Pita is out with animals and in the grass and hay every day. She doesn't have fleas but she could be allergic to something outside too. It will probly be really hard to diagnose but I will start with the food. |
I'd just like to ad a couple things here. If your dog won't take the cherry flavored Benadryl you can have it flavored at the pharmacy for about $3.00...they have bacon, chicken, chicken pot pie and several others. Jo didn't like the chicken flavor at all but he will take the smoked bacon. Also, Riley was itchy too, no fleas and no food allergies...the vet said he seemed to just have dry skin so he recommended Derm Caps. They look like a vitamin E capsule and I give him 1 a day. I cut the tip open and put it over about a teaspoon of soft food every morning, that way I know he gets all of it...if you put it over dry food they might not eat it all in one sitting. Anyway, the itching has all but stopped and he feels softer. |
Stomper always itchs. The vet can't figure it out. I'm thinking it is just allergies. I don't think it is the food either. I've changed food and he still itchs. He is now on medication. |
Has your dog been to the grromers or in contact with anyone elses dog, my mamas picked up scabies and had the same problems your dog has, and finally I too her to the vet to see if she had allergies and he saw little red spots by her ears so he did a skin scrapping and found out it was the scabies. After treatment she is back to normal and I never will take her to that place again, even though they can contract it from anywhere, but that was the only place I had taken her in that time frame, so if you find out its not the food or allergies or even dry skin you should ask about scabies. Anyones pet can get it and its so easy for them to pick it up. Good luck! |
Chloe used to itch all of the time. I found a tea tree oil shampoo that works great and she hardly ever itches. Now I need a conditioner that will make her coat shine!!! Joy, Nikki and Chloe |
This is so good to know. We actually had to take Capone to the vet yesterday because he was itching his eye so much he infected it. Now he has to wear one of those attractive lamp shades around his head and have eye drops for 7 days. My poor little man  |

Thanks for the insight. Jojo where do you get the Derma Caps from? can you buy it over the counter? I gave miko a little benadryl yesteday, for the first time, he hated it, but I kinda forced it down his throat. How often do you guys that give benadryl for itching give your doggies it and for how long?? |

I read all the responses and they're great - to add to this - I would make SURE it's not skin mites....fleas or other pests... then I remember a year ago when Chanel was scratching alot from playing in the hose outside - I got her some SKIN CONDITIONER called Veternarians BEST Moisture Mist SKIN Conditioner - sold at PETCO....I sprayed some on her and she stopped scratching the next day and hasn't had an itchy since. |
OK, I went home and did the following: Changed Pita's food to Natural Balance Gave her 1/2 a Brewer's Yeast tablet Gave her a bath with Aveeno Oatmeal shampoo (i couldn't get to Petsmart) Gave her 1 cc of Benadry She scratched allllll night!!GRRRRR I am thinking partly that she is allergic to the stuff I use to clean my floors with. I have all tile and I used orange pinesol to wash the floors with on Sunday. Pita comes to my office with me and when we are here she sleeps soundly in her bed and doesn't scratch near as much as at home. Soooo... tonight I will continue with the other stuff I am doing and I will wash the floor with vinegar and water to strip the floor. I will also get some Dermcaps. I will give it to the end of the week to improve but then we are going to the vet to check for scabies or whatever. When I get to Petsmart I will also get some of the skin conditioner, although I don't see any sign of dry skin...but I will try anything and everything at this point! Thanks for all of the advise! I will let you know the results! |
