Disturbing development - cats trying to nurse from my Yorkie Hi everyone; I've got a couple of adolescent cats and lately every time I turn around, one of them is trying to nurse from my female, not pregnant Yorkie. Puppy doesn't seem to mind, but it kind of creeps me out and I'm worried they could hurt Puppy, who's just a year old. It's gotten to where I'm afraid to leave them alone in the room because when I come back, one of them is on her and she's just lying there, relaxing. I wake up in the middle of the night, look for Puppy, and she's got a cat on her. Is this normal? Can this hurt Puppy? I think I'm going to find the cats a new home, but they're her buddies. Anyone got any insight? Please help...... |
I just googled the problem and found all sorts of other mention of cats nursing on dogs that were not pregant, some to the point the dogs nipples were getting sore. So, I guess it is more common than I would have thought. It did not seem to get much excitement from vets so I guess it is not harmful unless the nipples are getting sore, then Bag Balm was suggested. I would think about a little Bitter Apple rubbed on your girl's nipples and that might deter the cats. I would be weirded out a little myself. |
Thanks for the reply.. yeah, I Googled it and got the same kinds of answers, but was hoping someone here might have some direct experience with it.. it sounds like a non-issue but I get paranoid about the puppy and was afraid it might trigger some kind of bizarre hormonal milk production/faux pregnancy thing and turn her all weird. |
I never had that exact problem, but a similar one. My adolescent cat tried to nurse from my older nonprego cat for awhile. While it did freakme out, neither cat was ever bothered by it. I would try to stop it to no avail. Eventually, he stopped, grew out of it, or the older cat got sick of it and cut him off. I wouldn't worry about it too much. If your dog wants it to stop, i am sure she will let the cats know. Maybe try the a.c.v.... |
all of my cats had litters of kittens inside the doggie door/dog house that my golden retriever stayed in and on occasion the kittens would latch onto mama dog as she became known. i don't know how normal it is or what to do about it, but that happened a lot at our house and we didn't really do anything about it, Ruger was big enough to fend for herself and didn't seem to have any troubles from it |

My Ceci trieed to nurse Angle's pups one day. She was only in with them for about an hour. DH did not realize it was the wrong furkid with the pups (they look exactly alike). Her nipples got real hard and sore and I took her to the vet. He gave her antibotics and said not to let it happen again |

You can put a onesie on your yorkie, but leave the middle snap open for her tail:) They won't be able to "nurse" through it;) |
