jetblue carrier policy is "Your pet must fit in a carrier that is smaller than 18"l x 15"w x 8"h (45.72 cm L x 38.1 cm W x 20.32 cm H) and must be placed under the seat in front of you." If the carrier is 16" L x 9.5" H x 10" W.... can I use it for the flight even H is a bit over than their requirement? Or it really has to be under 8 inches.. It is really hard to find the smaller size. |
I think if it's a soft-sided one -- and it can be smooshed under the seat, you should be fine. They have never measured my carrier. The only other problem I have come across, is depending on the plane, the carrier won't fit under one of the seats (usually the aisle, but sometimes the window). It's too narrow. But, since you're traveling with your BF, you'll probably have seats together, and one of them will fit. Just my experience... |

I flew on AirTran from Sarasota, FL to Ft Worth-Dallas and back in May 2005. I checked on the internet and learned that the airlines did not ask for health or shot papers so I only had shot papers with me in case they asked. They did not. However, I read in one recent post that the airline did check her dog's health papers when she travelled lately. I did not have my yorkie checked by the vet before I flew because it cost too much. I had a bag which complied with the airline regulation with her inside and a tag with her name and my name and address and phone number attached to the bag. I had a small plastic container, which I put some water in and gave it to her one time on the plane. She did not eat before or during the trip but I had Nutrical with me and gave some to her at the time she was suspposed to have her meal. I had the bag underneath the seat in front of me almost the whole time except when the plane took off and landed I lifted the bag up in the air a little bit so she would not be too scared because of the shaking and noise. At one leg on the trip back the cabin stewardess was nice to let me put the bag on my lap when the plane took off and landed. I was not so lucky with the other ones. I did not give Leili any medicine for the trip but I was lucky that she was good and did not get sick at all. Leili also did not need to go to the bathroom during the trip. I changed plane twice each way and thought at first I could let my dog out walking around a little bit but could not as the time between planes was very short and they did not let dogs walk in the waiting areas. However, I did let my dog out of the bag and sat on my lap for a little while. Cathy |

Thanks! Thanks, Alaska Yorkie, for the research. Good stuff. CJ |
It is so nice that I can go back to my old thread. I am flying this week so I wanted to read again. it is really helpful thread! Anyway.. I am wondering if anyone has flown with Jetblue and what their experiences were like. I bought Sherpa's small bag, and realized that it is for a dog up to 8 lb. Guinness is 8lb. He can turn around in the bag, and he seems to be okay when I put him in it. But since the flight is 6.5 hrs, I just want to make sure Guinness will be okay. I hope flight attendets let me take him out under my blanket. |
That's why the Sherpa Bag is so great. No one even knows you have a dog but the stewartess. |

Oops! Typo.. The bag is for a dog up to 8lb, but Guinness is 9lb. |
I just got home from a trip to Wisconsin. I didn't even bother to ask if I could take Abby out. I kept her in the bag until right about take off. Once the attendant did a final seatbelt check, and the pilot announced, "prepare for take off" I took Abby right out and put her under the blanket. She slept the the entire 4 hour flight from MN to CA. Same as when I went to NY. And most of the time I don't put her back during landing. She just stays on me until we are on the ground and before the attendants have time to get up, she is back in her bag. I do try to be courteous to the other people next to me. I ask if they are allergic and then once seated I politely whisper if they minded if I put her under the blanket. Most people think the dog is so cute, they want her out so they can see her. I haven't had anyone say anything to me. But my hubby did have a psycho woman say something to him about being allergic. Long story about her, but the attendants flew so much with this customer they called her "Sybill". So I know it wasn't my husband. Remember, it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission!!! |
I am horrified I am just horrified about the Yorkie going through the xray machine in Vienna! I don't know what the radiation dosage is, but it can't be good. I am glad AlaskaYorkie's Father clarified this, and I want to stress to all of you NEVER LET YOUR YORKIE GO THROUGH THE XRAY MACHINE. I am very concerned about the possible long-term health effects from the dosage. If it were me, I would have been kicking and screaming at the security gate until someone who knew the rules cam along. No way Edie would have been exposed to xrays like that. |
i havent personally flown with maisy but she flew here when we bought her. she flew on northwest airlines because they have a special air conditioned part of the plane for pets. maisy seemed fine with it. |
I just returned from my first trip with my yorkie and I must say that it was not the most enjoyable experience that I've had! I agree with the others that said that they don't like to use sedatives. I tried a sedative on the first trip and I can honestly say that it didn't help at all. It made my baby a little weak but she still cried and clawed the whole trip. The flight attendants on the way down were very nice. They allowed me to hold the bag on my lap and one of them even told me that I could take her out and hold her. However, on the way home this was not the situation. They made me keep her under the seat the entire time and I was not allowed to even hold the bag on my lap. I also had a few cranky people around me (obviously not dog people) that kept giving me dirty looks throughout the flight. I was so upset that I wanted to cry. If they would just let me hold her, she wouldn't cry and disturb the other passengers. My flight was only 2 1/2 hours but it seemed like eternity. I don't mean to scare anyone from traveling with their yorkie. I was on vacation for 10 days and there is no way that I would have left her. We had so much fun together on vacation! I think that it all depends on what flight attendants you get. Some play by the rules and some don't. Also, it is a definite MUST to get your yorkie used to the carrier a long time before the travel date. I found that mine loved the carrier when we were at home but it was a much different situation when we were actually on the airplane!!! Motion sickness can also be a problem. We had a few issues with that as well. I will definitely fly with her again but it probably won't be for a while :) It was stressful but worth it. |
