Yorkies in cold weather Since our rottie passed away some months ago, we adopted a rescue yorkie mix who weights 8 pounds and has a very soft thin coat of hair. As winter comes here in the northeast, we allow the house temperature to drop to about 60 at night. Is that too cold for a yorkie all night? How about when we go outside and it's 30-40 degrees? And snow.....? Does he need pajamas or a sweater?? |
Hi, my yorkie seems to thoroughly enjoy the winter. He starts off in the fall with a sweater. As it gets colder a jacket gets put on over that. And for when there is snow we just got him a turtle neck polar fleece with front covering down his chest. I really hope it works for him. Baxter is 9 lbs and a little terror in the yard. He just zooms all over through snow or leaves. The only thing he refuses to step in is puddles. He hates water. Good luck with your little one this winter. Oh I lived in Peterborough for 22 years. Good to talk to a New Hampshireer lol |
I have hoodies for mine for in the winter. I keep the house pretty cool also |
Hi! :wavey: :welcome4: I'm sorry for the loss of your Rottie, and happy you've got this new little one to keep you company. Please tell us a little more about your pup. Yorkies do not have an undercoat like most dogs so they can be more sensitive to heat & cold. However, they are individuals and some can tolerate the different temps better then others. Gracie Ruth has very low tolerance to heat and I've yet to find a cold temp that she isn't happy in. Boo's just the opposite. :p We keep our home in the low 60's at night in the winter. I've found if they are cold they'll just burrow under the covers and snuggle close to us. I often wake up to find 2 or 3 little heads poking out from under the covers between me and DH. They are smart, they know where the warmest, coziest place in bed is. :D Just watch how your pup acts, it'll let you know if it's cold or not. There are several YT vendors who make wonderful pj's that also work well when layered with coats to keep them warm when going outside. I'd suggest you invest in a tee-shirt or 2, a nice mid-weight sweater, a warm coat and a pair of pj's. That way you'll have them on hand if needed. |
Our yorkies never needed anything while they were younger, but as their bodies slowed down, they got chilly even in the house during the fall and winter. They wore sweatshirts or fleece during those months all the time. |
I keep mine in sweaters for the winter. |
Every yorkie is different. Brody is "chilly" at the first sign of the weather cooling down . . .he comes in from outside and sits down and looks at me, all I have to say is "it's chilly" and he shivers . . .:p He loves the sun and Summer and being warm and toasty . . .doesn't like snow or cold . . . Rhianna is my hot blooded one . . .she is always warm . . .loves the cooler weather, hates being in the Sun . . . We keep our end of the house on 62 in the winter . . .if there is no sunlight to warm the house during the day, I put Brody in a sweater for the day . . .no need for sweaters in bed because he'll curl up next to my husband for warmth . . .:D |
Sorry to hear of your loss. Congrats on your new addition though.:) I have gotten Fancy some winter clothes - just sweaters, tracksuits, and a coat. Oh, and pjs for bedtime. I'm thinking about getting her some booties to for winter, she hates walking on wet/dew grass and I'm sure she will refuse to walk on the cold ground too. |
Fido wears Hurrta outfit, its great for these litle ones :) He gets cold so easilly, if its under 10°C he is shaking ! In the Fall he wears thick sweaters. |
1 Attachment(s) Thanks for all the suggestions. I think to be on the safe side, I'll get a sweater and maybe a coat and some jammies. If he seems to be cold, I'll be prepared. He's seven years old so as time goes on, he may feel the cold more. I know I do! I don't think there's much chance he'll end up in bed with me and my husband. He'll have to be content with the couch and all the afghans we have..... He's adjusting well to life with us and his two feline brothers and is eager to go outside, no matter what the weather. I'll try to post a pic. His name is Copper. |
I keep my furbabies in sweaters and coat in IL, and My house always stay at 70 -72 , cause I'm always cold. bark@ulater !!!! manina, miley:aimeeyork, max:aimeeyork, sasha:aimeeyo rk |
I have never put anything on Chester when he goes outside. We live in Michigan and he LOVES the snow. I take him to a big field and let him off his leash he goes WILD. You will see him bouncing around like a jackrabbit. He loves playing in snow/flurries/blizzards, lol. He seems to really like playing in snow that is over his head...i.e. so high I can see the tips of his ears only. And that's if I'm lucky. Between the two of us, I am the one with a low tolerance of cold weather and I have to chase him down to get him inside. It's a lot of work getting all the snow off of him, since he won't tolerate a hair dryer. I always have sweaters/hoodies on hand for once he is all dried off. The time spent is worth it since he so clearly loves to be outside in the snow. |
I'm sorry for the loss of your beloved Rottie. They are such sweet doggies:love: Your new addition is so adorable! What a sweet face, awww! My two girls are polar opposites. My little Luna (just under 4 lbs) gets cold if the temp is below 80:rolleyes: She will lay on our dark-colored wood deck, when it's SO hot that I can't even walk on it barefoot, in 98 degree weather, and I actually have to go get her:laugh: She won't come in! Izzy is my bigger girl (8lbs) and she hates the heat, loves being chilly:) One way to know if your baby is warm enough is to grasp the tip of his ear. If it feels cold, then he probably needs a sweater. The vet told me to use that to gauge how their temp is. Some dogs will shiver, some won't. My little girl QUAKES:laugh: My hubby likes the house to be at 70 overnight, as he works out in the sun all day and anything higher and he can't sleep. So Luna wears PJ's pretty much all year round. It's so cute, we KNOW when she's freezing, as she'll actually "help" to put her PJ's on by sticking her head through the hole when we hold them up:laugh: Then she does a little happy dance and has such a grateful look on her face:love: Have fun shopping for your little guy:) |
Where do you purchase winter items for your yorkie? |

My favorites for Daisy*Mae are the sweatshirt hoodies. They are soft and warm and cuddly--easy to take on and off, too! I also make her fleece wraps that go under her belly to keep it dry. We have other outfits like a snowsuit, sweaters, etc, but the hoodies are my favorite of all. She also wears them to bed. As soon as the weather turns cold, she gets her "warmie," which is a tube sock filled with rice and rolled up in a flannel pillowcase. She gets one to take to bed, in her stroller or carrier, or when coming in from the cold. (microwave 1.5 -2minutes) I am sorry to hear about the loss of your rottie. I know you will just love your new little one. Everyone on YorkieTalk will help you with any questions you have. We get excited when a new Yorkie Lover comes along!:aimeeyork |

My little Myah wears a sweater to bed at night. She sleeps in her crate. We keep the house at 60 at night in the winter. She loves the heat. She is another that will lay out on the porch on hot days...or lays in the sun by the back door. I will be looking for some jammies for her, but with her being 3 lbs, I haven't found any around here. I only have a Wal-Mart in town..and would have to drive 50 miles to get to a pet place that has any. For now, her sweaters work. She doesn't wear jackets outside in the winter...she just goes out and comes right back in...no playing in the snow for her. |

We usually start putting on a t-shirt in the fall (especially in the cooler mornings/nights) Most of those we have purchased at either target or walmart. We also have found some baby t-shirts that will fit perfectly! Both of ours sleep in their crates. We make sure they have cozy blankets to snuggle with when it gets cold at night. For the snow we were able to find waterproof jackets with a fully covered belly so that they can run and have fun in the snow. They LOVE it! |
