Socializing Bella 1 Attachment(s) Bella is currently a year and half. Due to not socializing her with other dogs when she was at a prime age, she is now afraid. She doesn't like warlking around the block and puts the "breaks" on once we get to the end of the driveway. I have brought her to the dog park on several occasions (four total in the past week and a half) to try to get her to play with the dogs. Instead, she'll sit near my feet, tail tucked in and butt on the floor to hinder the other dogs from sniffing. If I sit down while at the dog park, she will jump on my lap and if I'm not sitting, she'll jump on someone's lap who is (regardless if she knows the person or not, lol). Should I continue bringing her here even if it is at first stressful, or should I just allow her to be the homebody she is (and she is a VERY happy homebody, I might add). And is there anything I can do? The dogs she are around are usually her size, a little bigger or a little smaller. She was even terrified of the 4 month old yorkie that was a good 1-2 pounds. I really cannot afford the socializing class Petsmart/Petco has and would like some advice. Thanks! |
Whe I had just my Jackson, he loved everybody and all animals. So as I have added to my family, I have had no troubles with any of my yorkies being shy or timid towards other dogs. Most of mine will go right up to even big dogs and want to play. How old was Bella when you got her? Did she have litter mates? |
How long have you stayed at the dog park when you go? When she's sitting on your lap there, does she start to relax after awhile even though she doesn't want to participate? If she does, I'd just continue to sit there & let her watch hoping the day comes when she decides it wouldn't be so bad to be on the ground & greet a playmate. Do you have friends/family who have 1 or 2 small calm dogs you could set up play dates with? She might see that as less threatening & she could relax sooner. It would probably take some repeated dates for her to start making progress, but that's OK too. This approach might be more productive as the dog parks may be just too overwhelming to her. I'm glad she's a happy homebody at least. It's very possible that with time, patience, & repeated attempts she could do a turn around for you. Good luck! I got her at around 11 weeks old. She did have littermates. Like eight of them. Bella is at the dog park, the most, an hour. When she is on my lap she is calm and tries to sniff the dogs butts from above. She seems to open up, but slowly. All my family members have big dogs (St Bernard, Bull Mastiff) and she is terrified of them too, and they dont hang out rofl. As long as I know that this is normal for dogs who were never around other dogs at first, I think I'll be okay. Ill just go every other or every two days and hope one day, she'll turn around. |
Aw, poor thing. I agree with everyone else, I say the more you do it, the more she will get used it! :thumbup: She should open up eventually. Or maybe get her another Yorkie friend? ;) |
