help me? Hello there everyone. I'm very new to the forums. My name is Shelby, by the way. I have question for anyone that might be willing to help me. To make a long story short, I am currently job-less due to the economy and desperately need a baby to keep my company during the day when I'm home alone. However, I sincerely can not afford to spend more than maybe $200 on a dog, knowing the upkeep it will take with spending money on food as well. We live in a duplex type house with my mom and step-dad. Upstairs they have 2 dogs and 3 cats, plus I have my two step-children always in and out of the house. To get to the point, I absolutely have to have a puppy that I can raise to socialize and such. And I need a small dog even when it's grown. I have looked at the humane society where I live (Alabama) but I've found that most of those animals are going to be very large. I have fallen in love with the yorkie breed. Sorry about the long story, what I'm getting at is that.. is there anyone out there who might know of where I could get a yorkie, or similarly small dog for my price range? The only dog my husband has ruled out is poodles.. I think the cuteness factor freaks him out, lol. Thanks for any responses. |
welcome to yt. You do know yorkies have a cuteness factor too. I hope you find the dog your looking for but what if your dog gets sick ? Can you afford vet bills? How old are your children? Yorkies can be very delicate and children need to be educated. Sorry lots of questions but you didn't give much detail lol Best of luck finding your furbaby.:D |
Welcome to YT. :) Yorkies are a fabulous breed. However, before you get one, please read up on how much it really does cost to own one. Food is almost nothing compared to vet expenses. You will have the spay/neuter expense and maybe teeth extractions, puppy vaccines, more vaccines every 1-3 years depending on your state and preferred schedule. Then there is heartworm testing and meds (usually not optional), flea and tick meds (depending on your area), yearly check-ups, blood work, fecals, urinalyses, etc. And then hope nothing goes wrong or it will get expensive. My dog's vet and supplement bills have been a few grand in just a couple years. Then if you don't groom the Yorkie yourself, it will need to be done every 1-3 months and will cost anywhere from $25-$70. I don't want to discourage you from getting one, but if you can only afford $200 right now, it will be especially important to have a savings account for pup and/or insurance. :) Have you tried a Yorkie rescue? Or talking to breeders about getting a retired female? |
Try researching the rescues and shelters near you and check the rescue threads here. YORKIES ARE EXPENSIVE!!! I do not think you will find a yorkie anywhere near the amount you are suggesting. I mean that in the sincerest way. However you may be able to get a yorkie mix. |
I completely understand the questioning. The problem is not that we can't afford emergencies if need be, my mother has a long time friend that is a vet and in the past i have been able to pay on a bill. i just can't afford a huge lump sum like that right now and i feel that right now is the best time for me to have a pet as i have so much free time and nothing to dedicate it to. my step children are 2 and 5. the 2 year old is surprisingly gentle, she loves my parents dogs (i don't know there breed but they are pretty small, maybe 8 each) and by the way, i'm not just looking for a yorkie, i was generally wanting input so i do appreciate everything you guys are saying. if you know of any other small breed of dog that you think would fit my lifestyle and price range better, please feel free to give me your opinions. |
