house breaking blues My two babies will be 5 months in about a week. I have read all your helpful posts and think I have done everything right (it's them, not me, right?) Anyway, my question is should I put them in a kennel overnight now or wait another month. We do ok during the day. They are behind baby gate or in x-pen and we seldom have a problem. At night they use the paper but wouldn't it be nice if they could wait until morning and not stink up the place? Do I kennel at night? Or just continue what we are doing and wait for them to get bigger. By the way, they sleep in a bathroom with baby gate and an open door kennel with paper on one end of the room. Help. I am really getting discouraged with this! |
I don't know about others but Chloe was sleeping through the night from the get go (at 10 weeks old). We'd take her out one last time at about 11pm and then again at about 6:00 or 6:30 in the morning. She did great! (It was going during the day that we had to work on!) As long as she's in her crate, she will hold it. Also, we take her food and water away at about 8pm every night and that helped her hold it longer. Now that she is five months old, she goes for her last time at between 9:45 and 10:15 then we take her out at 7:00 the next morning. -C |
Have you tried crating them in your room at night? |
I have no assistance for you, as I am in and out of the bathroom myself all night long! lol so I have pads down for the little ones; in my hallway and downstairs. |

Sounds like you are doing a good job!! Don't get discouraged..it will only get better! I use to fight with my DH bc he wanted Peanut to sleep with us when he was a pup and I never let him! I said until he knows where to go potty he isnt sleeping with us. I had a crate for him..just big enough for a bed on one side and a pee pad on the other.. He had one of those little hamster water bottles on the side just in case he was thirsty. It worked great!! He caught on really fast. And it made him really good in his cage too!! I would crate him any time I was gone.. I think he was about 6 months when I started to train him in the bed...It was pretty easy..he would usually sleep during the whole night and when I heard or felt him move I would take him to the potty pad.. Then he learned how to jump off the bed and go potty on his pad, and he even learned when he came back if he barks once he will be picked up .. I think it all depends on what you want for the outcome.. with your pups.. Do you want them to be crated at night? sleep with you? what is it YOU are looking for? |
I say to to give a try. Crate them at night and see if they can hold it. no way of knowing without trying. I crated my pup from the get go at 13 weeks. |
