9/11 A Day of Service
 

Good morning family

Whether you voted for Obama or not, whether you "like" him or not, no matter where you stand....he has asked for 9/11 to be a day of service.

I take it beyond him, and think about all of those dear lives lost on that day...particularly the heroic passengers on the flight in the field in Pennsylvania.

So here is my challenge to you. For several months now I have been saving my daily papers for the local humane society. I plan to go to work on 9/11 and after my shifts are over I will pick up my girls and we will deliver these papers to the humane society to make bedding for the dogs.

Speaking of bedding....my next door neighbor lost her beloved Keeshond..Shadow. I went to the humane society website and donated an elevated doggie bed in his memory for some unfortunate animal who does not have it as good as my girls.(They send a very nice acknowledgement of your contribution to the family you are honoring)

They also asked for cash, old papers, and binders, and of course they love to have you volunteer your time as well. There are many things you can do to help your local humane society.

OK back to the challenge....I would like all YT members to honor the memory of those who died that day by doing something, anything related to our furbaby friends on that day. THere are many things out there, just look. Even if you just send your local shelter 10.00 on that day, it's easy, just a few clicks and a credit card.

What an impact YT could make on this day....please post what you might do, or did do in this thread, and I am sure it will be such an outpouring of love it will be incredible.

Good post! I don't really think there is a better way to show that our country is just as strong as it was 8 years ago than to donate your time or money to help others (human or not!).

Already planned on it...my old sorority chapter is cooking & cleaning all day for families at our philanthropic organization, the Ronald McDonald House. Always a fun time to go see the families and kids :)

That is wonderful....question....when families are there are they allowed to bring to family pet along if there is one?

Thank you for the idea. I will go and buy some to take along with the newspapers.

I will buy a couple of big bags of dog food for the Humane Society here.

Great idea!! I volunteer at the no kill shelter near me and it is so rewarding and they need so much more help. It is also a great way to show your kids what happens without responsible pet ownership.

I am a soon-to-be mommy of a precious yorkie girl, and am also mommy to a rescued cocker spaniel girl. My 16 year old daughter has already begun collecting gently used towels and blankets to donate to the local shelters here in California.

The outpouring of love will be incredible - thanks for reminding us how important it is to help others.

You know I was just thinking that somewhere, though it was not the top story of the day, some dog had to have gotten killed that day. Maybe on the planes, or maybe someone was allowed to have dogs in twin towers, even if it was maybe security working animals.


I know that our four legged friends were much used AFTER for body searches etc. They were a part of 9/11 too.

I have seen small dogs in kennels before in peoples' rooms, but I think the rule is that they can't disturb any of the other families or give any one allergy problems.

IMHO: Lets not loose site that Sept. 11th is a day of remembrance for those who lost there lives to terrorists. Dec 7th and Memorial day are also days of remembrance. Please choose another day, like the day after, in honor of the rescue dogs. Donna

Thank you for your post, but my suggestion was not to "honor" rescue dogs. I merely mentioned that they were involved after the fact in the recovery effort. Please go back and read my first post in the thread and you will clearly see who I suggested we are honoring on that day with our service efforts.

Maya and Mika took the newspapers and dog food to the human society this evening. They did their 9/11 community service.

This is a wonderful thread. On Wednesday, we took puppy food, cat litter, canned cat food, doggie treats and toys to our local animal shelter.

That was wonderful of you.
