Add a boy or girl? So we got Lily this past week. She's wonderful! I know, I still haven't posted an intro thread yet :thumbdown but I'll get to it. Anyway, DH said we can add a playmate for her once she's fully potty (she's 5.5 months) trained. So I'm thinking of putting down a deposit on a new baby. Lily isn't our only furbaby. We've also got a male boxer mix. He's neutered and absolutely wonderful with Lily and other small dogs, so I'm not worried about him as far as hurting a small dog. I know you usually go male/female. But I really want another female. We've got a male already. Would you add a male or a female? Lily is 3 pounds and will be around 4-4.5 full grown. So I want to stay around there for her new playmate. Thanks! |
Hm, that's a tough one. A lot of people with two females are fine, but others have constant/a lot of fights. Female/Female tend to fight more than Male/Male or Male/female combos. I think you're safer getting a male but if you truly want a girl, go for it. Lots of times it's a-okay. I would recommend getting both girls spayed as that takes away aggression a lot of times. Also, personally, I'd rather get the potty training over with both at one time, rather than waiting for one to be potty trained, then getting a puppy and doing it ALL over again. Also, the older girl may regress in her potty training with a new pup around. Sometimes yorkies can take up to a year to fully potty train. I think dogs do great with a playmate and need that social interaction with their own kind so I think two is definitely better than one! |
Honestly, I wouldn't go in to the search thinking of one or the other. Get the one with the best personality to fit your lifestyle and needs. I've heard of a ton of people going into look at puppies only wanting a female and come out with a male or wanting a male and coming out with a female. I just don't think gender makes much of a difference really. If my boys had been girls, then I would have loved them just the same because they are mine and they are perfect for me and my family. |
