Too tiny to have puppies ? Hi all, We need advise on if our fully grown/healthy female Yorkie at only 2 kg:s/ 4.4 Ibs would be able to have puppies. I assume we would have to find a similar size male Yorkie but thats hard to find in our part of the world. Any idea what the max size of the male should/could be ? Your input appreciated : ) |
JMHO, yes, 4 lbs is too small to have puppies. For me, the risk of loosing my sweet girl would not be worth the gain of a puppy or two. Gracie Ruth is 4 lbs and there was never a question I would have her spayed. People ask me all the time if I'm going to breed her. I tell them absolutely not. She's entirely too small, she's my baby and I wouldn't knowingly put her in danger. She trusts me to keep her safe and that is my choice for her. :animal-pa |
I agree with Teresa, that she is too small. Most breeders don't breed their females unless their in the weight scales of 5.5 lbs to 7lbs. Your girl could very well carry a litter just fine, but IMHO she is too small and would possible need a c-section or you could lose her. To me its just not worth taking the risk. My girl is 5.5 lbs and I am scared crazy that I might lose her if she is pregnant (about two more weeks and I'll know). Its a chance that any of us breeders take when we breed. The female is the one that decides the number of puppies (how many eggs she released during ovulation) as well as the size of the puppies. If you do decide that you want to breed her you need to talk to her previous owner (the breeder you got her from) and ask to her/him how many puppies the mother has on average as well as the grandmother. That will give you some idea at how many she could be having. There is also no exact measurement you should be looking for in a male size-wise (the female decides the size of the pups). It is better to use a male that is smaller just incase (my male is 3 lbs and dam is 5.5lbs), but its still doesn't guarantee anything. If you love her, you'd be better off spaying her and keeping her just as a pet. She's a pretty little girl and you'd be upset if anything happened to her if you breed her. |
My Matty is 4 lbs. I personally think she is too small to breed. Everything about her is tiny except her personality. I know there are other factors that come into play, but I'd leave that to the experts. |

She is too tiny I would just enjoy her for the wonderful pet she is |
Yes she is to tiny to be bred. It could kill her to have puppies at her size :( |
I agree...way too tiny..I would have her fixed so you'd never have to worry about it accidentely happening..IF you have any inclination on breedng her at all..go to the breeders section and just ask them about all the horrible things that can go wrong even with an experienced breeder much less with one who has nver bred..please for the sake of your dog fix her |
I agree with all the others, she is too small for breeding. |
