Another male Hi I would like to get a companion for Jackson my neutered male yorkie. He is two years old. I was wondering if it would be better to get a male or female. maybe a pup or even a little older. Not sure if he would dislike another male even though he is fixed. Thanks for any replys |
I have two males with no problems. Ben is actually Rocky's father, not that he seemed to ever know that. Funny how dogs are -- the sire seems to end his "fatherhood" at the "making" stage. But I don't think two males usually have a problem, unless they are going for the same female in heat. But since your boy is neutered, then a female would be fine too. It just depends on what YOU want. Maybe go look at a litter from the breeder you choose and let the puppies decide for you ;) |
in terms of "pack dynamic" I vote BOY!! I have 3 male dogs in the house and the only times I have tried to insert females into the mix (not only with these dogs, but others) the dynamic just gets mixed up. Dogs who were totally laid back get all "macho" and what not, even if they are all fixed. The girls invaribly go all "alpha" and beat up the boys (I can not tell you how many times I have seen this, both with my rescue work and with pets I had), I have rarely seen the case where it didn't cause some friction. I want a girl so bad it hurts (another baby to love, but also a girl to dress up and put pretty girly bows in!!!) but my partner and I have tried females and it just gets all tense in the house. So, for now, I am stuck on boys. It usually works out easiest. |

I have a male currently and my next dog will be a male. |
I think either will make a wonderful family! good luck in your search! |
I have 2 boys, and they are totally fine together. Since your boy is fixed, a girl would work just fine, but I would take your dog when you go look at puppies (all breeders I went to were totally fine with me bringing Joey), and see kinda what he seems to get along more with. Joey definitely helped us pick Tank. We went to one breeder, and he didn't really play with the litters (we went to a bad breeder...they had like 5 litters, going from 8 weeks to 1.5 years that they were trying to sell - we didn't buy from them), but when we went to Tank's breeder, Joey got along with the babies just great! They got along great, and we figured Joey's opinion should count! I wish you the best of luck in choosing the next member of your family! |
I have a male and a female. My female is most definitely is the alpha in our pack. My boy is such a lover and very submissive. We are adding another boy into our pack and I think he will find his place within the pack, I thought I would add another boy too because my girl is an alpha and I dont want to threaten her position. Good luck- I think either way male or female they do find out there place in the pack. |
Thanks so much for your advice. Still looking. I would not mind getting a yorkie maybe over a year or even two years old. I dont have to have a puppy. |
