Please help me find a ramp for Alex My oldest, Alexander, has severe arthritis and terrible problems with his back legs (he's had surgery several times but the problem was never completely fixed). To help him be more independant, I have doggie stairs all around the house. He's gotten to where he can barely climb the stairs over the last several months, and he slips or falls from them more & more often. He woke up needing to go potty last night and fell off the steps/bed. The doctor assures me he is fine - this time. But, I really need to get him a gently sloped ramp that's tall enough for the bed/mattress. I've been searching online but with S&H the prices are outrageous. Does anyone know where I can find one for a reasonable price? I don't know anyone who could build one for me around here. I really need to get something for him, he's my baby. I'd appreciate any suggestions. |
I have this but they only go up to the couch. I wonder if you can contact them and find out how much a custom one to your bed would be???? NEW Foam Dog Cat Pet Ramp - eBay (item 200379352604 end time Sep-07-09 17:40:19 PDT) ...of wait, I forgot, I have one upstairs too and I put a rubbber made bin up to the bed, put a pillow and blanket ontop and I push this ramp in front of that ;) |
Try searching your local paper for someone that does carpenter work Like a Honey Do guy. They usually so no job to small. |

I'm trying to picture the setup you have in the bedroom but I'm sooo confused today! I'm thinking the bin must be tall, not like the ones I have that are only 10" or so high? They go from the ramp, onto the pillow on the bin, then onto the bed? I'll need to think on that setup. Is it very stable? Alex has become so uncoordinated that a one peice setup would probably make me feel more comfortable. I am going to contact that vendor & see about getting a larger size, that's a great idea! |
Homemade Ramp I cut a piece of plywood, about 30" wide and 4 foot long. Got a hall runner rug at Wal-Mart and covered the plywood just rolling under at the top and bottom. The carpet runner caught on the rug in my bedroom and did not slide. I even got the runner in my washer when it needed it. I used this for a long time until I got a taller set of steps for my bed. It did stick out into the floor a bit but even the little puppies could use it. |

I have one upstairs in 'their room' that goes up to the spare bed. This is a regular bed height on a metal frame. The bin is something like this: http://www.rubbermaid.com/rubbermaid...=HPProd2936118 Then I put a standard bed pillow flat across the top and then a small throw blanket ontop of that. Then I push the ramp in front - with the traction control it doesn't move. It works for us, but you have to be comfortable :) |
Foam Ramp My kids would chew that foam ramp to pieces! They love to tear up paper and chew up foam rubber I lost one of those corrugated type mattress pads that way. |

I covered them in fabric ;) |
Hobby Horse Turds You just remined me of something! You know those little foam pellets they pack stuff in for shipping? My daughter calls them hobby horse turds! The Yorkies love them, too! |

Ramp Places like Lowes will cut the piece of plywood for you and I just propped one end on the edge of the bed and let the other end rest on the floor. No "building" to it. If you wanted something better, check with a woodshop class at a local high school. If you pay for material, I'll bet there are teens who would be willing to build it. |

Well, Alex fell again last night. This time it happened on his way UP the stairs. He's ok but I am so afraid he's really going to hurt himself soon. So, I said to heck with it and just ordered a ramp online. I don't have time to try to put something together myself or try to find someone local who might be able to build one for me. Alex needs one NOW. The one I ordered is similar to the pics TLC posted above, but it's not fully enclosed and it's lightweight so I can move it to change the sheets, clean, etc. I'm having them add the siderails to what you see in the pic. And, this site offers free shipping so it helped me save a little $$. I will also be ordering the small foam ones like TLC has to put in other areas of the house. I just hope they come soon before my baby gets hurt. Thank you for all your wonderful suggestions! I wanted to add that I've moved most of the steps so that he can't use them. I will be picking him up to help him get where he wants to go until these arrive. This is the one I ordered Doxie Dog Ramp -- Free Standing Open Sided Pet Ramp - Low prices, plus free shipping! |
Ramp That looks like a really nice ramp and should be safe with the side rails so Alex can't slip off the side if he stumbles. I think you made a great choice. Let us know how Alex likes it when you get it. Good luck. |

I don't know what you have in your area, or who you know, but here are some, usually, cheap/inexpensive suggestions: If you have lumber company near by, sometimes one of the guys will throw something together for you in their spare time out of spare lumber; also the same if you know a carpenter. Best I have found, is talk to the "shop" teacher at the local high school. They can usually find some "boy" to make one for you. You may have to cover it or something though. |
