Thin Hair My Yorkie is 5.5 mos old. His hair is thin & not as thick as it should be...it is thicker around face area, but still not as should be. Would cutting it help? He was VERY sick 3 mos ago & was on antibiotic & anti vomiting meds...almost lost him, but with meds, lots of prayers, & plenty of TLC, he came thru & is one of the most spoiled/loving little babies you could ever find. I was just concerned about his hair & wondering if there was anything I could do to help it. Katherine & Jesse James |

Sophie's is thin as well and I can already tell that she looks as if she is going to have a pretty silky coat. I just make sure not to thin it accidentally by using conditioner during baths and conditioning spray for between baths so that when I comb and brush I don't pull it out or break it. I can't wait to see what she looks like with her adult coat! So don't worry too much about the thin coat unless you notice something like it falling out in patches or something like that. |
His hair could very well be a result of illness and meds, and his young age. If he is on good quality food and otherwise healthy, you may notice improvement over the next several months. Some people think omega3 supplements, or fish oil caps (cut open and put on food or squirt into his mouth), help improve hair and health overall; you might want to try that. Yorkie's coat changes for the first 2 years, so it will be a while until you know what he's really going to be like. Cutting hair won't improve the growth, but may improve the "look" somewhat. My Yorkie Tiki has thinish hair that grows slowly, partially because it it silky and partially because she is "liver challenged". I think she looks better with a little length, not too short, but trimmed so it's not stringy. Too much conditioner makes it look worse. The nice side, is she doesn't require a lot of brushing and doesn't mat. |
Kiki is 8.5 mths old her hair is really thin , too. It's nice because she only get a few mats around her legs. I do have her hair trimmed because if I don't it looks stringy. I can only use the 3/8 puppy size hair bows for her top not . If I try to put in a 5/8 big bow it just falls out. Sometimes I wish she had the thick hair just so I could use the bigger hair bows without worrying about losing them. |
Thank you all for your inputs...I feel a little better about his coat now. It isn't falling out or breaking off, so that is good. What do you guys use to trim your babies? I have a moustache groomer...I was told this was the easiest to use for basic trimming, like the ear tips & butt area...but can it be used with a longer length blade for all over? Would I have to use scissors first? |
Fancy has thin hair too but I'm too scared to cut or even trim it. I want it to grow long though. |
my yorkie has a thin coat also. It lays so pretty but it is thinner. The new yorkie I got I think will have a thicker coat so it will be all new .. But reading here that they change for the first two years I will have to wait. Thanks you for the information all. |
Thanks for the great information. My TJ also has the thin silky coat.. and it has been changing, getting a little thicker over the last year. He will be 2 in December. |
