She's driving me nuts....
 

My Shayna is now a big girl and in her 2-3 week of heat, but she's turned into the crazy aggresive barker. Is this normal? Ginger never had this problem. Shayna is barking at the air, the wind, the birds, a helicopter and will wake up and start running and barking at night. She's gone nuts. She is also aggressive with Ginger, territorial and attacking. A friend suggested I throw a diaper on her and walk her, but it's been excessivly hot and I'm also afraid, I know she is totally a fertile myrtle right now. But last night was the worst and it went on till 12 midnight and I have neighbors. I yelled, squished a plastic bottle, shook the penny can, chased her and reassured her it was all ok. Does anyone give Midol? Arghhhhh! Any suggestions?:(

Join the club...I have TWO right now that are in heat! :eek: (I suppose it could be worse, last time around it was 3 at the same time!) They are driving me nuts :jump28ib: and I think that they would very much like to kill each other! :eek:

How old is she? And why would you have to put a diaper on her to walk her? I'm confused, lol. I know she's in heat but if you're outside, it shouldn't matter. I used to own female dogs and they never made a mess or anything. Also, is there a particular reason you're not getting her spayed? I find spayed dogs are not as aggressive. I agree with exercise, exercise, exercise! A tired dog is a happy dog. :) She just sounds like she's trying to be protector of all things "evil" like that noisy helicopter, lol ;) Let her know she doesn't need to protect you - you're going to protect her. Overall, I do believe energy is a huge part of it. You're sounding really stressed out and angry at her right now (understandable!) but I think if you calmly correct her, things will work out better. Jackson's never been a terrible barker or anything but occasionally when he's gone into his fits, I remember getting soooo angry because it was always at the worst time, I would jump up, pissed off, shake the can, and it NEVER worked. Once I calmly went over to him, gently told him "Thank you" for the warning that there's a bird outside (or whatever he was barking at) he will stop. Or I simply go over to him, snap my finger and say "Quiet" one time. Have you tried a squirt bottle? Whenever Jackson barks at my dad's cats, he gets a quick squirt in his face, now 99% of the time he won't bark at them.

She's 9 mo., the diaper is to keep other dogs in the neighborhood off her and protect her, she did bleed and I did used dog diapers (and a cute one at that) for the 1st week and a half, now she can run free but not through the neighborhood. No I don't want to spay her yet, I know the pros and cons and have read all threads on the subject. Yes I was annoyed, but I will try the calmer approach, and as for squirt bottles, she loves them, way too much fun for her to be a punishment. I even tried time outs in the house while we were outside, but the minute she got out she'd run barking. Even funnier, she went to find her sister in the house, then she got her sister Ginger to open the sliding door (she has the big strong nose, a mini-bull) and then ran out to bark. It was actully hysterical and coniving at the same time. Smart lil' thing. I just pray this is a phase...

Ohh gotcha - didn't even think of keeping other dogs off of her! Duh! lol. I'm so used to my boy, Jackson, I forget about the girly things! I'm sorry I don't have any better suggestions for you :confused: Sounds like you've done everything I would have suggested! Yeah, she's still pretty young so maybe it's just a phase?

LOL. Those terriers will always find a way to get what they want. My Yorkie and Rat Terrier are like that and have plotted together. I told a story on here awhile back that there was something on the coffee table that they wanted.... Jasmine is taller so Tobie was the look-out while Jasmine grabbed it. Sometimes it's hard to get mad at them because it's so funny. :p

Please! Spay her IMMEDIATELY! The hormones are making her do all of the behaviors you don't like. AND she is prime to get pyrometra and mammary tumors. It is a disfiguring, horrible operation that we have had to do 7 times lately because people don't spay their dogs! I just had to pay $1800 for a Yorkie girl with a closed pyrometra! She almost died. They CAN die over night from this and you won't even know why they died. If you love your dog - spay her now!
