pottying on walks? advice please hi everyone Well Mitzi is now 14 wks old and doing well in most areas. She has had all her injections so has been allowed to go 4 walkies for the last wk, yeah. Anyway we've taken her out every day & she loves running around & sniffing everything, but we cannot get her to potty when we are out! At home she has always been trained to go in the garden & as long as we take her out regularly we don't have too many accidents in the house. We take her out about every hr & she always goes wee wee, so i don.t understand how we can be out in the fields with her for say 2 hrs or slightly longer & she refuses to do anything, then as soon as we get home she rushes out to the garden to relieve herself! At home we use a clicker n give her a treat when she goes potty in the garden so we have tried clicking the clicker n showing her treats to encourage her but that has'nt worked! Any ideas on this? Is it just a case of waiting till she's bigger & can be out for longer, then she will have to go? Also wanted to say thanks guys, i have'nt posted much on here but am on here most days & learnings heaps from you. You gave me a warm welcome n all seem pretty friendly |
Only suggestion I have: maybe take her to an area outside where you know other dogs have pottyed. A lot of times when they smell other dogs, they will go. Also maybe let her drink a lot of water, and then take her on a walk, she's going to have to go at some point and when she does, praise, praise, praise! Other than that, she's pretty young - I'm sure she will learn. :) |
It's not a bad thing that she is going where you trained her to go. Maybe it will be a good thing that she can hold it! :D My friends pup is trained on pads and when I have her over we can play outside for hours and she'll hold it till we get home and she'll still go on the pad (a lot on the pad). |
My puppy Winston did the same thing forever when I first got him! The more he got used to going on walks and the areas he had to sniff the more relaxed he got and eventually went potty on our walks. I want to say it took us at least a month. He still generally saves number 2 for my yard but he at least goes pee. Just give her time to get used to her new surroundings and she will probably start cooperating on your walks :) |
It took Roxy awhile to get the hang of it too. Do as suggested above. Maybe some play dates with other dogs too. She'll get it figured out. |
My Stormy was pad trained and we could be out for hours and she would NOT go pee or poop ever, only on the pads! I think she peed once outside and pooped once in the whole time I had her. Do you have her leashed out in the fields? IF so and she is not leashed in the garden perhaps thats why she doesn't know. I know some dogs need to feel that "freedom" to go |
thanks for your replys. Well i decided not to worry about it, then yesterday we took her out for the day, to the beach (she hated the sea, bless her). We were gone 8 hours n she was running around alot of it (between carry sessions) well finally after the first 5 hours she stopped and did the longest wee (yeah) I made a huge fuss of her but then she went the next 3 without going again, waiting until we got home! kinda frustrating to know she can hold it but goes like every hour at home and if i dont take her outside then she just piddles on the floor! just as well i love her so much:):):) |
They can be kind of funny like that. Bailey was trained on puppy pads, and I always intended to transition her to outside pottying but I work full time and...yeah, we just stuck with puppy pads. The first time she EVER went outside was on a walk at about 6 months! I let her walk around in the grass a lot and sniff where other dogs had been. I think that helped a little. Now I've seen her go a couple times in the backyard in the ground cover (I don't have grass in the backyard). Maybe these little improvements will finally help me transition her to outside only. But I think they basically have to get used to the idea that a new area is okay to potty in. Let her smell other dogs' scents and praise her like crazy when she finally goes! |
