Litter box raid I am so completely grossed out right now. Joey was under the piano just chomping away on what I thought was a treat he had hidden (he likes to hide his toys under the piano also). I picked him up and checked in his mouth, but he had already swallowed it. Then he gave me a big smooch and I nearly fainted -- he had been gobbling up cat poop from the litter box. I clean it up each time the kitten goes there, but he must've gotten there first. This is a rescue kitten who does have her shots and is healthy (and fecal tested negative, although she had coccidia originally when she was found). Can he get sick or catch something from this? He loves to eat poop and it makes me ill. Now I have something new to worry about. Tomorrow I buy a box with a lid. |
That is a bad habit! LOL! My dogs have no interest but my when we go to my in laws- everyone munchs but my two. Ugh... |
Try to deter this while he is still young... I have 2 poop eaters at home too (I blame their horrible breeder for this) While mine are way better (after 4 yrs) of constant poop watch, they still regress every now and then :( gross  |
My first little yorkie, Tashee, did that also, she thought the kitty box was her snack tray, I guess. She was very small, so I gated it so the cat could jump into it, but she couldn't. I no longer have cats so it's not a problem anymore, but that is how I handled it then. |
Who Knew Pineapple could be so useful!? Quote:
It makes their poop taste terrible and should deter the dog from eating it!! GOOD LUCK! |
2 of my 3 dogs eat from the cat litter box. My litter box has a lid and everything, but they still get it somehow. They know when i am not watching too. It is so gross! but i dont know how to stop it!! |

cool litter box I found. I heard about this and the saw one at the local pet store and thaught it was so cool. It looks like a rubbermaid sorage container, but it has a hole in the top. I thaught this was so cool, because I have dogs that raid the litter box too. the cats love it suposedly because its more private, and for the dogs expecially small dogs its harder to get into. |

I asked my vet about why my Spitz mix would do this occasionally. She said that some cat food is high in fat so when it comes out it is yummy for him...Yuck!! |
I know it is so gross! Mine tries to do the samething! I try to keep them boarded off so he can't get in, but if he can get a chance he is going to go for it! yuuuukkkkk! And then they seem to want to give you a kiss. |
Usually the eating poop is with young dogs. They say when dogs are pups sometimes they need more nutrients and believe it or not, the poop has it!! My 2 Chi's stopped when they were about a year and a half. My dogs did it a lot back a couple months ago, but are now doing better. They think about it, but I correct them they stop now. They also dont think about eating it all the time now, where a few months ago they would eat it everytime they went. It drove me crazy! I am gonna try the pineapple thing. |
Sophie tries this every once in a while, too, so we bought a $12 baby gate at walmart to keep her out of the room where they go. They can jump it and she just sees it as a barrier and leaves it alone. That might work if you have a room that you can put the litter box in. |
