Harley fear of bath My harley is very well adjusted, and has full run of the house. I am home with him all day, play with him constantly and we are snuggle buddies. But when he sees me get the towel and shampoo out for his bath, he cowers, shakes and whines. He contines to shake throughout the bath and comb out. Is there anything I can do to help him be less stressed when it comes to bath time? |
I give my little guys treats before and after baths. I have also taken them into the bath with me which helps some of the anxiety. You may want to try that. |
Thank you. I will try the treats. I have nerve damage in one of my arms so I would not be comfortable putting him in the shower with me, I have a hard enough time just washing me own hair. lol It just breaks my heart to see my little baby so upset, I don't know what caused this. He has been getting a bath once a week since I got him when he was 12 weeks old. He is now 9 mo old and it has never gotten any better. Is it normal for them to do this? He also shakes when he sees new people, or when I take him somewhere he has never been. The Proud mommy of Harley:aimeeyork and Gracie:animal36 my pug baby.(8 yrs old) |
My little boy shakes too. I don't know if it's because of his size, or if he's just nervous. He's only 3.5lbs. I also have to use a belly band on him because he gets so excited, he dribbles pee everywhere. |
Timba is 3 yrs. and he see's me getting his shampoo and conditioner and towel ready and he books out of town.... I have to get treats to lure him to the bath... after he is washed and dried he gets crazy cause he knows he is going to get a treat for being a good boy and letting mommy dry him up nice and neat..... he runs around for a treat and barks... then he gets a treat after bathtime is all done.....:animal37:tongue::jump28ib: |
I have a friend that had the same problem. I suggested,(don't know if you are doing this or not), I bathe Nolee in the tub. I let the water run and use a cup to wet and rinse him. I never let the tub fill-up with water, leaving the drain open the entire time. This may help. Good Luck! |
All 3 of mine HATED baths in the beginning! Basil (3 yrs old) now just allows it with no struggle at all. I think it has to do with trust... I swear I could do anything and she would not resist. Teddy who is now almost a year still fights a little but does pretty good. Bella is new so she is still in the fight or flight mode LOL. I wash my babies once per week. I put them in the tub while sitting on the edge and put their body (NOT head) under warm running water. I use my hand to wet the head and cup for the belly. I shampoo them, rinse, conditioner them, rinse, then I use spray conditioner... I then brush or comb them while drying them. Teddy was the worst! He used to climb my body biting ANYTHING in sight he was so scared but in time he now just allows it. I do not give treats... I just give extra love and kisses and tell them how beautiful they are in an excited voice. They are like new dogs after their baths... They run around the house and everyone has to love on them because they all smell like Jasmine :) PS I hold my baby WHILE I get the towel and since the shampoo and conditioner stays in the shower, I do not have to retrieve that. Hope I helped relieve some of your worry... Consistancy is the best method... I am their pack leader and they will get a bath so I do not give into the dislike... I just keep going... I think if you show worry for their reaction, you transfer the worry to them... Just my opinion |
Thanks Everyone for your suggestions. I will try these and see if it helps. There is no way around getting a bath, he has to get one once a week if he wants to continue sleeping with mommy, so he will just have to get used to it. You'all have been so helpful and I am learning so much about my little baby. Thank you. P.S. I guess you'all can't tell I'm from the South can you? Hehehe |
