new house, afraid at night? So this is an odd one. Diane is now a little more then 1 year old. During her first year she lived in the same home but visited a friends home very often (once or twice a week at least). I recently 'partially moved' (i move between two homes now). To transition Diane i would take her to the new house one night, then leave her at the old house for three or four nights (she is our family dog so there's people she loves in both places, ie no separation anxiety). Everything works fine except when she wakes up at night (to go potty or just because she hears a loud noise) she becomes terrified! She will shake and just sit up and not sleep. She will just quietly shiver in the dark. Diane always sleeps with us, but she is crate trained (i haven't used the crate in almost 8 months - she out grew it). The only thing that works is putting her under the blankets, but i KNOW that is going to turn into an issue (i'm really trying to avoid having a neurotic dog, she is very calm and good). Any ideas would be appreciated. |
Have you tried putting a night light in the room |

I also tried leaving the TV on with some noise / light. Neither worked :( |
How long has it been since you've been in the new house? Quote:

This is also the house that i mentioned in the post (so she has been visiting this house for her whole life) she LOVES the people there. Always excited to play with them. |
But are you there permanently now or do you still go back and forth? Because I just recently went through this with Bailey and still do go through it occasionally with him. Sometimes he doesn't sleep through the night. He doesn't wake up afraid and shaking but he doesn't sleep through the night and he will wake up barking or just sit there almost lost. Quote:

I think your baby will get used to it, but it's a matter of time. It's taken Bailey quite some time too. I've put on some soothing music which has helped. It's different than the t.v. because it's more soothing to them. Also, when you baby wakes up and gets upset, make her stay where she is supposed to. Make her lay down. She will eventually learn that this is ok and this is where she is supposed to be. I hope that makes sense... :) Quote:

I have been doing this for almost 4 years , between IL and Fl, I carry some of their toys, I also carry with me their blanket's, I took their beds from IL to Fl and brought new one in IL when we came back. I leave night lights on thur out the house in Fl , It take them one or two days to adjust and then, they'r fine. bark@ulater !!!! manina,miley:aimeeyork,max:animal36 |
thanks everyone! Good advice. Slow and steady i guess =) |
We live in a basement suite and whenever she hears the people upstairs move during the night she gets all rowled up or scared, so the only thing i can do is confort her. I give her some attention until she calms down and i pet her until she falls asleep. I know I can be very tired the next day but at least i made her feel safe at night. And i also have a night light above her pee pad every single night or else she would get lost at night?? goodluck :) |
