Minksheen!?! So today I tried out Minksheen on the pups. I love the way itmade the pups coat look. Later I walk in the house from grocery shopping and smell like a weird (what I thought was mold) smell. I am smelling around and it was in the xpen! I thought they had gotten into something so I made Jer smell and we figured it was their coats. It almost smells like the tick and flea stuff... So my question is... Is this shampoo at all harmful? I mean I guess I know that people on YT wouldn't use it if it was... I am just double checking. :) I read the contents and it has citronella, eucalyptus, cedar oils. It is probably just my nose being sensitive and use to our old baby powder shampoo and conditioner... It just took me back. Please make me feel better cause most things that smell this strong are usually harmful. |
Never.... I have never heard of it...so I never have used it. However the stuff that you said are in it are ok......so you might just have a strong nose.... |
There is a lot of people that use it. I have a sample bottle I have been trying. I guess that stuff is the stuff that keeps the bugs away. I don't think it would be dangerous though. |
I have a gallon setting collecting dust that i bought before trying it, we bathed 2 dogs in it & it matted their coats so bad that both had to be cut down, we could not get them out. it was very sickening |
I use Minksheen on my 2 and I really like it. The smell is a bit strong at first, but I actually like the smell. It makes mine really silky and soft. But, definitely shop around until you find one you love. I also like biogroom protein-lanolin shampoo and Chris Christianson Day to Day shampoo and conditioner and his Ice on Ice detangling spray. |
I liked how Minksheen left their coats, but I too, couldn't get past the smell. :( I've tried a half dozen different shampoo's and the one that seems to work the best and has a pleasant aroma is Biogroom. I use the Fluffy Puppy. Besides liking to say the name  I like that it's no tears. DH sometimes isn't the most careful when giving baths, so I like that it won't burn their eyes if a little gets into them. |
I use minksheen sometimes as it makes my cottony coated ones look nice but that smell is hard to take. My friend has ferretts and it smell similar to them, sort of a musky shunk lite smell. |
We use minksheen and like it. It reminds me of the Avon - Skin So Soft. That's what I think it smells like. The smell seems to die down in a day or so and Ginger's coat is really soft. I will continue to use it until it's gone. I may try another kind after that but I wouldn't say I would never buy it again. I would. :animal-pa |
:)minksheen is the best! i used it yesterday on Fiona as well as my boyfriend's dog, Honey, whom is a lab/pit mix, and she felt great as well! it smells so good, and it's great too! |
I love the way Minksheen makes my dogs feel, but I use Pet Silk conditioner too (favorite scent is Rainforest) to make them smell oh so wonderful! Minksheen is widely discussed in the Grooming Forum. Many people love it for cottony coats, and it is perfect for my Morkies, though can seem a little oily for my Yorkie with a thinner silky coat. |
I like Minksheen, and I must be a weirdo because I also like the smell of it. |
I use minksheen on all my dogs and love it. Their hair is so soft and shines like silk. |
I use Minksheen, and I really like the smell. To me, it's fresh and clean. |
I use Minksheen and I like the smell. It is really strong when you first bathe them but the smell fades away in a few days |
It does have a very strong smell, but if you give the bottle a good shake right before using it, that tends to a help a bit. I also found that as I got half way through the bottle, the smell doesn't seem as strong (linger as long) as it used to. |

Did you dilute the MinkSheen? It's made to dilute before using. I've been using it on Roxy & like it. She's got a silky coat. The smell is not my favorite, but after rinsing well, I don't smell it at all. I like that it has both the shampoo & conditioner in it too. |
I LOVE MINKSHEEN! and I must also be weird because I love love love the smell. It is very refreshing and Louis always smells clean (: |

I also use Tomlyn Nova Pearls Cream Rinse & it makes my 4 w/silky to cottony coats soft & oh so clean & fresh smelling. I like that it repels insects naturally too. Some people can't handle the smell, so getting a sample first would be ideal. |
I'm wondering if the stinky smell comes from NOT SHAKING IT? Then again I condition my pups with Bio Groom and the smell is not that bad. But it might be that the conditioner made it smell less like Minksheen. Hmm. I love the smell in the bottle thou LOL |
I did not like Minksheen the first time I tried it. But I had to admit it really made the pups shine. I finally decided the smell was not that big a deal and I ordered a gallon. It just makes them looks so great and I love that it has natural flea & tick repellant. I have not used any of the Frontline for 2 months now and still no fleas or ticks. I am hoping the Minksheen will keep them away and I can do away with a much harsher product (the frontline). It does seem like they need a conditioner when you are done shampooing. The hair has a funny feel to it. But when you start combing them out, it really is okay without the extra conditioner. I am using it on a long silky coated (Ben) and a cottony puppy (Rocky) coat and it seems to work great on both of them. You do need to thoroughly brush them before shampooing though. Any mats in there before you shampoo will be nicely set in after. About the smell -- as long as you can detect some of the smell on their coats, it is still working to ward off the insects. |
I received a sample bottle from a fellow Yoyo and she sent it to me at least 3 mths ago and I bathe my two Yorkie's almost weekly and I love what it does and I like the smell too! The first time I used it on my Silky Lexy my husband noticed he difference immediately. I brush my girls regularly so there is very little matting if there is any its under their arms from the grass. Sometimes I will add a little of my conditioner for extra softness. I get lots of compliments on my girls coats. I think it does work differently on the different coats so I guess it all depends on what sort of coat your Yorkie has. If anyone has a gallon they don't want I'd like to take it off your hands. :D lol |
Just bathed my today with Minksheen, and I think the smell is a cedar, which isn't bad. But, I still top off with PetSilk Rainforest conditioner for yummieness. Are you really supposed to dilute it? I saw where it says groomers can dilute 4/1 or 10/1 depending on equipment used. |
Add us to the wierdo's list. We love the smell and it reminds us of home, San Diego. The natural oils in it are what cause the smell and are a natural insect repellant. Be sure to shake well before using it  At the moment we don't dilute it, but we are planning to buy one of those RapidBath systems and that may require diluting. I think it makes Maggie May's coat beautiful, soft and shinny. Makes grooming easier. For some of the bad tangles she gets (when daddy takes her outside to play ball!) I use Cowboy Magic. |
I have been using it for about 6 months and what I like is I have not used any Frontline plus on any of mine. I have not seen a flea or tick. The smell doesn't bother me. I have noticed to if mine go out in the rain they don't have that terrible wet dog smell. They smell just like they have had a bath. |
I've never used Minksheen just because it has to be ordered online and the shipping, etc just isn't worth it to me. I've been using Buddy Wash on Jackson and I LOVE it! The smells great but not too strong, it makes him really soft, and it rinses out really fast. I've used BioGroom before too and liked it a lot. |
