Have You Flown With Your Yorkie? HI, We are thinking about flying between AZ and NY to reduce expenses. Our little Bella is wonderful traveling in the car. We have never taken her on a plane. She is 3 lbs. If you have flown with a Yorkie and have some advice, please share it. Did you sedate your puppy to make the flight easier? What about potty time? Thanks |
I have never flown with my boy, but here's a section on YT where you can find some info! :) Traveling with Yorkies - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community |

In her carrier, make sure you place two crate pads, one on top of the other, just in case of an accident. Take a leash, give her a long potty break just before you leave your home. Feed her 3 hours before your trip. Make sure you take puppy wipes, a couple of baggies for disposing any accidents. I usually take a wet wash cloth in a baggie should they need any clean up. I've had a couple of accidents. It's very easy to take the dog into the restroom (a bit crowded in there), it takes a bit of juggling, but doable. |
I recently flew with Joey from NY to Florida roundtrip, and he did great. He weighs 3.5 pounds. I got him a sherpa small carrier which was approved by the airline and fit right under the seat in front of me. We got to the airport early and I took him for a little walk (Westchester County Airport, lots of grass there). I brought all of the things Mardelin said in the above post. Joey went right to sleep after takeoff and was perfect during the trip. No need to sedate, which I wouldn't recommend doing with a dog so small. Good luck, it will be fine. |
Flying with Yorkies I fly all the time with my guys to shows. They actually love it and sleep most of the way. Just a few things, book you dog on board asap. they only allow some many on baord in each cabin. US Air can be a pain, while you book you dog, they don't take payment at the time and I was told I'm not guaranteed a space!?!? I found flying between Phoenix and New York is GREAT on Continental. You book your ticket and the dogs and pay for both at the same time. Make sure to arrive with plenty of time to spare before you flight. I usually allow 2 hours. Always keep your dog in the carrier there are a few people who hate the fact we can fly with dogs. Also remember you PAY and your dog is considered you carry-on. You are only allowed 1 personal thing. I ususally take a large pures with a small water bowl, wipes and FOOD, just in case your suitcase doesn't make it. |
