very happy about reimbursement from VPI!!! For those you have been asking about pet insurance...just wanted to let you know what I sent in and what I got for a return...I have 2 yorkie girls and pay 70.00 a month for both of them. I have the Superior Plan. I had sent in 1 yrs worth of claims (you are aloud to do this) The amount came up to approx 1750.00. I sent in their spay and teeth cleaning as well even though I KNOW the plan I have WILL NOT cover this. However, because Sadie had to have a tooth pulled they considered her to have gum disease (which she does not have) So....the amount that they sent the return back was approx 750.00. Of this bill I received 611.73 back!! I am VERY happy with VPI. I could have paid more per month for a upgrade that would have included the spay and teeth cleaning but, you only spay once! and as for the teeth cleaning...if they need it I will just pay for it..SOOOO. I believe the 70.00 a month is well worth it! |
I'm glad you are happy. Really. But you obvioulsy aren't an accountant....I run a large grant and spend a lot of time looking at cost/benefit analysis. So, 2 dogs. $70/month x 12 months = $840 you spent $1750 + 840 =$2590 you got back $611.37. (611.37-2590=1978.63) so, you still spent $248 MORE than if you hadn't had the insurance at all. So, how is that a good deal? |

If you want to look at it that way, then why are we paying for health insurance?...do you really think that when my husband pays 800.00 a month X 12 months =9600.00 a yr that we really even come CLOSE to spending that in doctor bills when we only go once a year!! We all have to pay..no matter what it is ,,,and if you really look an analyze everything it would be depressing. Look at property taxes...we all pay a school tax...my kids are 26 and 31...So......to answer your question...YES! I feel I made out well...In this day you get NOTHING for nothing! |
I think she wrote "of this bill" she got $611. I'm not sure that was the total amount she was reimbursed. I have insurance also with the idea that it would be there to cover major incidents. I submit claims for routine things also...these routine claims offset a little the cost of the insurance -- not 100% but it helps. I had a Yorkie 3 years ago that had to have emergency surgery and spent 4 days in intensive care. It was was INCREDIBLY expensive and cleaned out my savings and some on a credit card as well. I guess I could stick the $70 a month into a savings account and over time it would build to an amount that would cover a major incident, but my Yorkies are 2. What do I do if they get sick now? $70 x 12 x 2 = $1680 (that wouldn't have made a dent in my emergency vet bill) |

That's great!! I also have VPI for all 3 of mine and have come out way ahead on Cali but luckily I haven't had to use it for Roxie and only once for Pixie. The reason I have it is for peace of mind that I could afford any emergencies that come up. Insurance is not something you are getting to come out a head it is to cover major issues. I wouldn't be without. |

Thank you girls! I have been member on here for quite sometime now and have NEVER gotten a response like that! Not that it was so bad but, I really feel she insulted me! I am SO glad I have the pet insurance and feel I got a great return back...and ....Sugarmomma.....thank you! my point exactly! If we sat down and thought about the car payments, house paymemnts, health inusrance..so on and so on...we would go out of our minds realizing what we really end up paying...and what we are getting for it! Thank you! |
I did a worry/peace of mind analysis, and I KNEW insurance was a good idea. Its fantastic when they pay claims for routine things you have to have done (like your teeth claim). I don't expect anything back when I submit claims for routine things (I certainly don't expect it to cover the cost of the insurance), but every little bit helps for me! |
Are any of you members of banfield the pet hospital also?? On top of the insurance?? Mya goes to the one here in Atlanta (i renewed because I am very happy with the vets there even though I have heard bad things about other locations)...anyway...it is about 25$ a month and it provides me with free vaccinations and office visits and 10% off medicines/xrays/etc. I am contemplating getting VPI but don't know if anyone ever really does that and Banfield? Mya had to have 2 hip surgeries in the last 8 months and a hernia surgery...i know poor baby she's only 1....but anyway it was fairly discounted, almost like 40% I think....I dunno if I should have both to help out even more? |
You mean having 2 insurances and submit to one insurance what the other doesn't cover? I'm not sure about that:confused: It certainly wouldn't hurt to ask! I know with ANY insurance...they will not cover a pre-existing condition. |

Look, I don't see how you can say I insulted you. I just did a quick calculation. I do feel that way about a number of things: I don't pay for collision insurance on a car that costs less than $6,000 because the premiums would be more expensive than the cost of replacing it. I carry health insurance on my family because a medical emergency could run to the 100's of thousands of dollars. I love my guys, but vet care is just NOT that expensive. And yes, I have made the trip to the emergency vet before, it was less than you paid in a year's premiums, so I came out on top. All I was pointing out was that you paid out more than you got back, plus you did pay the "uncovered" portions of those bills. I guess because I deal with more than my own personal finances (I run a $21M grant for a state) that I feel obligated to do a cost/benefit analysis on these things. Insurance companies only make money if you spend more than they pay. Otherwise, they couldnt afford to stay in business. I don't see how on earth you can compare that to house taxes, which everyone has to pay to keep the roads, schools and government functioning. What I am saying is, in any given year, you spend close to $1000 on TOP of unreimbursable vet bills, when, if you saved that same amount of money (in an interest bearing account) you would have far more than the $500-600 they might reimburse you in any given year. But I am somehow MEAN for pointing this out? |
I think it's because you said, "clearly you aren't an accountant" which came across as, "clearly you aren't very smart". Even if you didn't mean it that way. |
