For those with a rescue dog I have a little girl that came from a very bad abuse situation. She was quite starved, and in the months that I have had her she has really filled out. Too much, in fact. I need to cut down on her food, but it is hard for both of us. She loves to eat, she is so happy at mealtime, and to see her with her little round belly and satisfied sigh after mealtime just makes it so hard not to let her eat her fill. I can harden my heart and cut her back, but the slightest hunger pang, and she starts eating her or my other dogs poop. If she isn't hungry, she doesn't touch poo. Any suggestions on how to put my now plump starveling on a diet? |
There is something you can get from the vet to stop them from eating feces. The only other suggestion is regular feeding intervals and LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS OF EXERCISE. :) |

I had/have the same problem with my Hallie! When I got her she had been starved as well and a year later, she has "filled out" too! I had to cut her back to lite food (same brand) and make sure she gets lots of excercise. She is down from 6pounds to 4.5! She wasn't much for walks or playing fetch, she was really happy to lay around and chew on something (like me haha) so I started having her chase me up and down the hallway. It sounds silly but we both have a good time and she gets her excercise! She also used to eat her poop, but since changing to the lite food and the regular playtime she has stopped. I hope this will help you and your baby! |
Do you or can you pick them up as soon as they are deposited in the lawn? Other suggestions I have read about are: Vitamin and/or mineral supplementation Talking with vet about diet - a nutionally complete, readily absorbable diet and the problem is supposed to be solved... Plenty of acceptable things to chew on. Good luck. |
My Bitsy has filled out a little too much around the middle too! I'll have to try that running up and down the hall playing! She and I both could use the extra exercise! I've tried the pills that stop them from eating poop and it worked for us. I haven't seen ours do that in a long time :) |
Try doing some clicker training with a can of albacore tuna. If your dog is really food motivated they will learn the most amazing tricks. However this also gives her excersize while eating, and staggers the portions over time allowing her to feel full. I run chewy through all his tricks until we have finished a can of Tuna (one small bit at a time over a half hour or so), then give him a scoop of food with the tuna juice poored over it as the "jackpot" for doing a really long stay or some other magnificent feat! |

What kind of dog food are you feeding her? I've heard quite a few times that this can be due to lack of vitamins. |
Not heavy but I play tag with my boys, especially Bengie. He loves it. I will say Benni, Momma is going to get you" and the game is on. He hides behind things and pops out at me, we will go round and round the dining room table and when I get close, he will get down on his front paws and jump from side to side and then off we go. He loves it as much as I do, we also dance. Sometimes I have to dance by myself until he gets going. One thing that he does that is funny, is when he dances, it is always on tippy toes. |
