Questions about my Yorkie Have a few questions about my 4 month old Yorkie named Hershey. :aimeeyork First of all he will go potty outside but if I don't constantly watch him he will go inside. He knows that he is not suppose to go inside but he won't let me know he needs to go out. How do I get him to let me know when he needs to go out?? He gets treats when he goes outside and lots of praise. I don't know what else to do. Secondly, since I first got him, he bites constantly. If you try to hold him he chews on your fingers, if you walk he chews your feet, if you lay down he bites at your face. He very rarely will chew on dog toys. He chews on the furniture and anything plastic. I love to play with him but it is hard when all he wants to do is bite you. Petting him is out of the question. I don't think he is doing it to be mean, but it is driving me crazy. My last pet was a Boston Terrier and while he was very energetic he was nothing like this. What can I do?? :animal-paNeed Help |

Hi, when my Yorkie was a puppy she did the same thing she would want to bit my hands and would get mad if I didn't let her and she bit at our feet, she didn't like to to chew her toys and bones, but as she got older and I would tell her no bite she grew out of it. I guess it's puppy thing. LOL |

I didn't have the chewing problem with Piper but I did have a problem with the potty issue. Piper would always go potty outside but it was up to me to make sure I brought her out every couple hours or she would have accidents in the house because she never asked to go out. She is 15 months old now and she still doesn't ask to go outside but I have learned to read her body language. She does what I call her potty dance. She moves back and forth from one side of the room to the other, kind of pacing. I now know she has to go potty and I let her right out and she goes immediately. I'm hoping that someday she will learn to go to the door and ask to go out. She rarely has accidents in the house anymore because we are always keeping a close eye on her all day. |
Hello & Welcome to YT!:) Potty training takes time - 4 months is still pretty young to be housebroken. I've read Yorkies can be hard to potty train too. The best thing you could do is get a crate and put Hershey in there when can't watch her. Take her out frequently until she goes and praise her like crazy through your actions and treats. Make a big deal about it!:p Chewing/biting is normal because they are just like human babies - Hershey is teething. Try experimenting with different chew toys or search through the fun & toys forum here on YT. I know someone on here has some good ideas to share. My Fancy like to chew on the water bottle lids - I'm afraid of her choking on it so I leave it on the bottle and give her the whole thing! :rolleyes: Silly girl!! |
Hmm.. I was going with my yorkie on yard about every hour and he learned that`s he needs to pee outside.Try this if you have yard I`m sure it will work :] Good luck :) |
Hershey is still a baby at 4 months. An ex-pen is a great asset when house-training a puppy. If he can't watch him than he needs to be in the pen. I also use washable piddle pads because one of mine loved to tear the paper ones to shreds. I actually didn't trust mine to run free in the house until they were 1 yr. old. Oh, one other thing. Make sure that you use an enzyme cleaner wherever he has an accident. Otherwise he will return to that spot over and over. ~Joanne~ |
