8 hours and counting!! Going to pick up my new puppy tonight at 8pm!! :D Decided to call her Teeko (we were going to call her Bella but it seems there are lots of Bella's out there) so Teeko it is. Have an appointment made for the vet tomorrow to check out her coat (remeber the flaky skin prolem) and also to give her an overall check. Anyone got any tips on how to make her first nigth as comfortable as can be. I have a huge spare room in which I have an x-pen set up against a wall (like I have the pen opened out and then put against the wall to make it even bigger) her crate will go in there along with her pee pad and I have a really great toy given to me by my folks - it's a pretend dog (like a soft toy) and inside it has a small bag of seeds which you heat in the microwave - so it stays nice and warm for a few hours. I figured it might be a comfort to her in the crate on the way home? I was talking to the breeder yesterday and have been told that our girl is the last to go, her other littermates were all collected in the past couple of days. Will this have any affet on her I wonder? All thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated. J xxx |
Love the name! You must be so happy. I'm sure everything will go fine good luck at the vets. And sorry, I forgot to welcome you to YT :D:D:D |
Awwww congrats cant wait to see pics:) My only advice is not to over do it make sure the pup gets plenty of quiet time and have nutrical on hand just in case. |
congrats!!! |
Thanks guys - I'm very exited but also a little nervous!! Yikes :) I don't have any Nutrical, this is something I'll be discussing with the Vet tomorrow. I'm not sure if we have nutrical here in Ireland but if we don't then presumably there is an equivalant. Sorry if this is a stupid question - but is there anything that can substitute for the first night. What I mean to say is, if for any reason my girl is showing signs of an attack during tonight, would I have anything in my kitchen cupboards which could tide her over?? Like are there any normal foods that I could give her as an emergency alternative to nutrical? |
Congrats on your upcoming new baby!:) |
Congrats on the new puppy! Can't wait to see pic's. Take a blanket, towel, teeshirt, something to rub all over her mommy to capture her scent. This way she'll have something with her that's familiar while she gets use to her new home. You can use Kayro Syrup if Nutrical is not available. Pancake syrup and even honey will work in a pinch, too. Just rub some directly onto her gums for fast absorbtion. |
Thanks TeresaM, I'll do just that. Hopefully she'll be ok. Will get some pics up as soon as I can! J xxx |
How exciting!! The first night can go either way I found, either they are quiet most of the night or they cry. I usually anticipate the first few nights that I will get little sleep but most of the time they may get up one or twice. Maybe being the last to go will make it easier since she will have spent some time away from her siblings. It sounds like you are well prepared!! When I didn't have nutrical I used pancake syrup when one of mine went into low sugar and it worked really fast. Just make sure she is eating and that will usually prevent low sugar. |
Congrats on your new baby!! Love love that name. :congrats::happyboun |
Thanks for all the advice, really, it goes a long way!!!! I'm sat here in work now just watching the clock. It's 3pm here in Ireland so not too long to go :) |
Congrats on your new puppy. |
It sounds like you've got everything you need! One thing I have to say is though, the first few nights when you put her in there alone she is going to CRY. It will break your heart, but you've got to let her cry it out. If you run to her and cuddle her, she will get the idea that if she cries, she gets attention and it will create a bad habit in the future. Of course, if she's crying because she needs to potty, that's one thing, but you'll know the difference between the "I'm lonely" cry and the "I need to potty" cry. Maybe see if the breeder can give you a blanket or something small that her mama sleeps on and put it in with her and also a dirty shirt or something of yours to sleep with. It helps some. |
:) Congrats on your new babie :) How exciting :p |
