A Yorkie that does not like to go on walks? My 3 y.o. Ms Daisy really has an attitude when it comes to going for a walk lately. She will only go a short distance, and sometimes barely out the door before she puts on the breaks. This is a relatively new phenomenon, and at first I assumed it was just too hot out for her liking lately. This cannot be the case, however, because even when it’s been cool in the evenings she will do the same thing. Of course, I was concerned that it could be due to some type of pain she may be having when walking, but I eliminated that possibility since she still is happy to walk all over the house and play fetch, and she has no problem heading back home at full speed. We just returned from a walk, and she was so bad, I had to carry her all the way to the far end of our walk before she would happily make her way – in the direction of home. Only on the way back did she poop and pee. She is all excited when I ask her if she wants to go on a walk and then acts like this! She is a very smart little girl, too, and good at getting her way. I cannot just drag her in her harness; that cannot be good for her. Her little brother loves walks and never puts on the breaks. Any advise? |
Hmm maybe just start her out on a little walk and when she does good give her a treat...I dunno what else..That is so strange. She is up to something!! Peanut will usually act like that when we have already walked for 30 mins or its too hot..he will put on his breaks or just flop down on the ground. |
Is she spayed? Maybe it could have something to do with that? I only have a boy so I wouldn't really know too much. |
My baby girl Blossom (RIP) hated going on walks, when ever she saw that I took the leash out to walk Joe she would run the other way.....but she did like it when I took her with me but carried her the whole time. |
Thanks for the advise and thoughts. Yes - I could just bribe her with treats, but I hate to get into having to treat her just for walking. You know how they are, she will soon learn to expect it. And I will have to give one out to her brother too. She has been spayed, by the way. And she does like to be picked up. She was scared of the thunder earlier today, but this has been going on for a while. |

I have the same problem with Gus, but it's been since day #1. He doesn't like to walk away from home, but is good walking back. You might carry her away from your home or have someone drive & drop you both. See if she's okay walking toward home like Gus. If it works, I have no idea why she won't walk the other direction. |
Zeus has been walked twice a day since we got him in Jan. He puts his brakes on and lays out like a bear rug. It is so frustrating, because, he will walk nice and then suddenly stop. He knows instantly when we are on our way back home and practically runs! He hides when I get his leash out and we have to play chase for about 5-10 minutes! |
Rockie was great with the 25 minute walks. I'd say the last 2 months he has been doing the same thing. He'll be really excited about putting on his leash until we get across the street at the school parking lot where l walk him sometimes. He is 2 1/2 years old now, we have had him since he was 11 weeks old. |
My miley is 3 year old she use to walked for least a hour , but not after 9:oo am , I think the sidewalk was too hot, so I would carry her , well now she walks 25 min or so and wants to be carry. I will put her down going back home and she will fly back. So I don't know what's up with her. Max will walk until he see her stop , and now I have to carry 2 dogs LOl. I have been doing long walks by myself and short one with them. I'm looking into getting a dog stroller, and try to get them to walk, as much as I can, than use the stroller if I need it. Good advice. My Piccolo is just like your Gus. So, I carry her to the destination and she trots home. Lol. Never could figure out why. (Of course this causes all kinds of comments from people walking by. Ha.) |
Layla HATES walks... HATES them- i have to carry her around the corner and then drag her for a bit and THEN she wil walk- we do it EVERY day- soemtimes twice and she STILL puts up a fight. |
Is it possible she is picking up anxiety from you? The reason I ask is one of the things I learned when I was showing my yorkies in the ring is that they pick up anxiety from you. It's like it goes from your hand to the leash . They sense it. Is it possible that when she was younger she experienced another dog scaring her, or other traumatic experience? The other suggestion is to make the walk enjoyable, bring her favorite small toy, maybe some alone time with you. I would talk with her as you normally talk with her while you walk with her. Hope this helps. Let us know how she is doing. |
Sugar sits her butt down and won't move as soon as I reverse directions to go home ;) |
It's possible that something scared her, or looks scary to her at night. You can try carrying her out for a block and see if she gets more enthusiastic after that. You can also wait out her stalls. Praise her and give her a treat once she starts walking on her own, as opposed to luring her out of her stall by tossing a treat. Can you try different walks? Thor just does not like to walk around the neighborhood for the sake of it. He'll walk to go somewhere, like the park, or home, but not just for fresh air. He's a very results driven dog, I guess. |
Ours is afraid of the dark! She will go out fine during the day... but as soon as the sun goes down she wants nothing to do with going outside for a walk or otherwise! Maybe there is something that is worrying her. Try going out a different door if you can, or starting your walk in a different direction. |
Just to let you know when my little Yorkie came to me (in March) she didn't know what grass or a leash or even walks was (she was abused). She was the same way she would hide from me when it was time for walking. I just learned both of her back knees are bad. Some day she will need surgery. But the doctor was telling me one leg was worse then the other where her knee cap goes in and out. He thought that is why she didn't want to go for walks because it hurt her. I go on small walks with her and she does fine. But believe me it has been a struggle. Hopefully that is not the situation for you!! Good luck:) |

It's so very sad when u hear these poor little things get abused, Hope she does better. God bless, will keep u both in our prayer! bark@ulater!!!!! manina,miley:aimeeyork,max:animal36 |
My Pixie hated going on walks, I would carry her out the door put her on the ground and she would hit the ground like she wanted to crawl into it. The other 2 like to walk. I can only walk them when someone goes with because I am too afraid of trying to grab 3 if needed. So lately my dtr has been going on walks with us and she discovered that if you drop Pixie's leash she will walk so nicely right along side me, I never am more than an inch away so I can grab her, also we live in a very quiet neighborhood, with no through traffic. My dtr has the other 2 on leashes so I can give Pixie my full attention. She loves walking now, but if I pick up her leash she hits the ground and refuses to budge. She was not abused but older when I got her and had not been on a leash. I cannot explain why she walks without the leash being held on to other than she is the pack leader of the 3 and feels she doesn't want to be restrained. It is so nice to be able to take all 3 for walks now. |

That is so interesting about Pixie liking to walk without you holding the leash. Hmmmm. I'll have to try it in a quiet area. |
I know it is so weird. Just got back from walking them with the neighbor girl who comes over to play with them and we walked all over and as long as no one held her leash she walks fine. It has taken me almost 2 1/2 years to get her to walk outside on a leash! I am so happy. I am hoping eventually she will let me hold it while she walks. |

In our Ms Daisy's case, I really doubt its a medical issue, as she will fetch and play chase with her brother, and also does a lot of the Jack Russel jumping thing evey time she greets me (which I try to discourage because I dont want her to damage her knees, but its hard to get her to stop). |
A lot of great posts, I'm glad that my girl is not the only one out there who puts up a fuss about walking. Tonight when we went, I asked her if she wanted to go for a walk and she continued to just stare out the back window (we have a fox family who walk in back of our house each night around this time). SO I thought that could be it, maybe she was too caught up in waiting for Mr. fox? Eventually she did come though, and went on a normal walk. I think it was mostly because my gf came with us, and she usually does not. Like most things in life, I doubt there is only one cause for this behavior. I think its a combination of: she wants her mom, she wants to look out the window, its too hot... I do know she is a very clever girl. I guess I will just continue to pick her up until we are headed back home if this behavior continues. I may try the treat thing, but if I wait for her to initiate good behavior, I could be waiting for a very long time! |
Thank goodness I don't have that problem. The only time Niyah stops is when she is tired or gets hot and then I carry her but I am wondering if I should just wait for her to cool down and continue on thinking that she might catch on to the fact if she lays down, I will carry her and she will do this all the time when she doesn't want to walk...ummm... |
