Jealousy Well, I picked up the new puppy yesterday and Walker is sooooo super jealous! He wouldn't look at me on the way home, he won't touch the toys the puppy played with and he won't let me touch him after I played with Morgan and my hands now smell different. How do you deal with a jealous dog? Granted, it's early in the game. This is just day two. But I feel bad for Walker and I'm trying to pay just as much attention to him as the puppy. I even made him something special for breakfast this morning. Please tell me, that he will eventually like his new brother. By the way: Morgan IS Walker's brother, just a recent litter. Any advice? Thanks;) |
I had a similar problem when I first brought home Josephine to my older lab Hendra. Hendra did everything in her power to stay away from the dog including walking behind furniture instead of straight across the family room where the puppy was playing. Any toy Jo-jo played with was shunned and Jo-jo herself was completely ignored as well. I think this is where you are now. However as time went on Hendra starting actively seeking out my attention because since she was tired of pouting. And because I'm always near the puppy she had to get over her jealousy, suck it up like the big girl she is and walk near Jo-jo. Then after a few days of that Josephine was old enough to go on walks with Hendra and they bonded playing on a field near my house. They get along great now and I really believe it was the walks were they were forced to be near each other. I'm not sure if it'll work for you, but it certainly worked for me. ^^ -Kelsey |

I've been throwing the frisbee all morning for Walker and the little one is trying so hard to keep up with him. Now he's out for the count...too cute! |
Wylie felt really bad when we first got Marcel...and I felt so bad for Wylie :(. He became very needy, clingy, and insecure...and I just let him have his feelings, held him, reassured him. If giving treats, we always gave Wylie his first - to let him keep his "alpha" position. He really wanted nothing to do w/ Marcel at first. Now, they are best buds. Marcel is the *consummate* little brother and is totally happy w/ that role - he shadows and worships Wylie and just thinks he's the coolest. I'd say Wylie started "opening up" to Marcel within maybe 3 weeks or so? It can take a little while, but they'll be okay! :) |
It can take time with some. Just try to keep your "pre" new puppy, routine as close to the same as you can. REasurre Walker, make a concerted effort to pay as much and more attention to Walker as the new puppy. Don't try to force the relationship. Let them feel each other out, if the puppy annoys Walker, keep them seperate. Let Walker go to the puppy. Let your new puppy learn potty behavior from Walker, when you take him out, take the puppy out too. With patience and fairness, you'll get through this warming up period :) Also, don't leave them alone together when you leave, always supervise when they are together, initally. :) It won't be long before you will see a connection, or event or moment when you realize they are going to get along just fine :) |
I am going through this with Andy and Jillie. When I picked Jillie up, and it was a 330 mile trip one way, Andy sat in the car with his face in my arm all the way home. He would not look at Jillie. This Friday will be 4 weeks since getting Jillie and Andy has not made much progress. I give him special treatment, let him go first, he gets the frist treat, you name it. He wants no part of his little sister, other than he would eat every drop of her food if he could get near it. He is on special food, so that is a no-no. He gets along fine with our friend's dogs, he just does not like sharing his Mommy and his home with a little brat. Hopefully time will take care of this. |
It took my girl (only child of 2 years) a while to accept the new pup. It was an adjustment for us, but she was very jealous and needy or didnt want us at all. At night I gave them each momma time- the pup would be put in bed and I would rub on Roxie and give her kisses. Then it was the pups turn he got his time. Now it is a part of every night. It will get better, they are now best friends and it was one of the best decisions that we have made. |
It took about 4 months for Sam to really like Harley, it also took me a long time to bond with Harley because Sam was struggling with him so much. They are the best of buds now BUT Sam is still jealous of Harley. If I even talk to Harley Sam is all up in my face. If I pick up Harley Sam comes to my feet and just stares at me. If I put Harley in my lap Sam comes running over. They get along now but the jealousy seems to linger. |
My journey has been just as fun. I had some friends drop in one Sunday in July and gave me an 8 week Maltese. I had just lost Max the month before and my Cocker, Mazie and Yorkie, Misty, were still trying to figure out whast to do. When they first saw Cassie, both of them went back to my room and laid on my bed for about 5 hours. They came and ate then went back to my room. At night when I went into the room with Cassie, both of the dogs went to the bottom of the bed and stayed there all night while Cassie slept with me. The next day the older two finally came out of my room and laid on the couch and chair while watching Cassie romped on the floor. It took about a week before Mazie would lay on the floor and sniff and play with Cassie. It has only been in the past week that Misty has started playing and acting like a mom to Cassie. Different dogs, different actions on their part. |
