911 help what to do with pup all day My lifestyle has changed and I have a 5 yr and a 5 month old yorkies. Due to work my dogs are left alone 10 hours a day 4 x a week. I have tile and carpet in my family room/kitchen. I let the 5 yr old free in that area with a doggie door. I feel so guilty for the puppy she is in a decent size kennel in my kitchen with pads and food. I would let her run free but she likes to go outback and get in the bushes and I scared she might eat something. Do I take a chance and let her free or is it wiser to keep her in a kennel all day. TIA |
I would keep her in where you know she is safe. Do you give her toys/treats to keep her busy? |
I do give her toys and chews. She had no interest in the Kong. I have been able to rig my laptop and cam her all day. I just feel so bad she sleeps all day and looks so miserable. |
What about attaching a few xpens together? That will keep your pup enclosed where you want them. Also be careful with toys when your away...it's amazing the things they can do with toys. |
Rotate her toys, get those that have treats hidden in them. My dogs don't like kongs or nylabones either. I think she will do better as she gets older, right now she probably likes to play a lot more than an older dog who would be content to sleep a lot of the day. Do you leave a radio or TV on? You could try having the radio come on at a certain time everyday. The dogs will learn that the radio means the day is half over, or you will be home in an hour, etc. Have you tried hiding toys/treats around the area she spends her time in? You could do the same with scents (sleep with a teddy bear, have the other dog play with a toy, have a freshly washed one, one that was left out on the grass for a day, then put them in the kennel for her). You could get a rubbermaid container and put different things in there, dirt to dig in, toys, pillows, and rotate that. Also, I have treat toys taht I put my girls kibble in. So to eat they use the toys to get it. This keeps them busy and helps my Maggie slim down a tiny bit. It is hard to leave these guys, isn't it? |
Thank you for your post you have given me a lot of great ideas I am going to incorporate :). I feel so guilty leaving her in a kennel when the older Yorkie does whatever he wants sleep all day LOL.. |
I would either keep her kenneled or give her the run of the kitchen. Tough decision. |
I would want to keep her where I knew she was safe- she is still a young pup and there is too much that she could be curious in! Good luck! |
In situations like this, it's probably best to setup a webcam so you can also keep an eye on her at work if you have access to the internet. I also work 4 days a week, (one day a week from home) and I was also worried about Brandi. I decided to keep Brandi in a kennel for her own safety as well as for the safety of my carpet and I put a webcam on her. Silly me, here I was worried that she would be going crazy and all she does is sleep all day. Having the webcam definitely alleviated me of some guilt and worry. She didn't like being in her kennel at first but she has gotten used to it. I turned it on everyday and check on her several times a day. Like I said, most of the time she is sleeping peacfully. I even watch my cat sometimes tease her. She really gets riled up then. If you have access to the Internet while at work, by all means setup a webcam so you can see what's going at home. I would recommend a webcam to anyone who is worried about their little ones at home alone while they are at work all day. If something does happen, you can rush home if you need to. |
Thank you everyone for your ideas. Today I took the plunge, I set up my already existing webcam, put the puppy pads and lots of toys. I download a whistle which I can remotely activate and I plan to play music mid-day. So far I have witness the pup drive my older dog crazy by wanting to lay close together, they have been sleep all day AND she was a good girl and went potty on her pad… its is noon so far so good :D |
That's great! Don't you feel better? Be careful though watching them can become addictive. Wouldn't want you to get fire from work :p. Brandi is pretty boring, all she does is sleep most of the day. I know her pattern very well. She sleeps until about 11:00am, then she piddles around in her playpen, then back to sleep....barks a little bit and then back to sleep. One time she scare the life out of me, I was watching her from work and she didn't move for the longest time, it was well after 11:00 am. At first I thought there was something wrong with my webcam. Anyway, I was thinking should I go home but then she changed positions, drank some water and went back to sleep. I was like "whew" I gotta stop watching this webcam so much. I don't check on her as much as I used to because I know her patterns. Now I just check in every few hours or so. I am hoping to be able to let her have run of the house real soon. I still hate putting her in there but she still has way to many accidents. |
Aslo remember at five months puppies still sleep alot. She is sleeping because she still needs a lot of rest. Once she is older, both dogs will probably have a party when you go! I would keep her safe and lots of limits and boundaries will help her be a good doggie when she is ready to have more freedom with your other pooch! Mary:animal-pa |
