Yorkies who have feathered friends! For those of us who own a parrot or bird. How do your yorkies interact with them? Stormy could of cared less about him, she was probably more scared of him then anything and would avoid him always. lol My moms yorkie would go crazy and try to lundge at him and probably eat him if she could!, we never let him out if my mom has her dog over. But Lola is a little different. It actually seems like she wants to play with him? Is that possible?! He loves the attention I can tell and he will walk over to her when he is out and she will do a little bark/whine at him and move her paw over to him and he will try to get her and she will jump back and bark at him, then he makes a noise! lol It seems very friendly and I am curious to know if this is a good friendship between the two? |
I have a U2 (Umbrella Cockatoo). We've had her out of an egg. Our Yorkies protect her and treat her like one of them. I do watch though and never leave her alone with them. Always supervised with me right on the floor. Boo will actually throw the ball to them and laugh when they get it, or she'll call one of them and then dropthe ball on their head and say "Oops." She will also sit up on the top of the couch with all five Yorkies and bark out the window with them. LOL. Elaine |

That is great!!! How funny! I would love to have a large parrot like that once I am all done having children and I need a big friend like that! hehe. I have a small conure, he talks a little bit but he is really friendly and playful! He thinks he is the boss of everyone and argues with me sometimes lol |
We have two cockatiels . . .Brody does wonderful with them . . .I used to be able to let them out of their cage and let them walk on the floor or just leave their cage door open and they would climb all over their cage . . .until Rhianna came . . .she would EAT the birds if she could! For some reason she absolutely hates them . . . So when I want them to get some exercise I actually have to put them alone in the spare bedroom . . .if Rhianna ever got a hold of one of them . . .that would be it for them . . . |

I have an Alexandrine named Asia. My yorkie Remy has a strong terrier personality so I watch they very carefully when the bird is out, I don't trust Remy completely. There are pictures of Asia in my album. Eileen |
I may be the minority here, but I can't stand those pesky smart type birds. My bff's dad has one and it is sooooo tempermental. Also once in the late 80s my family went to the Tropicana hotel in vegas and they had a bunch of parrots there on perches. One of them bit my mom's finger so bad, she needed to get stitches, and for no reason. Minutes before the same bird had taken a pic with my dad it seemed fine. Those beaks are SHARP and I don't trust them. Just my opinion. |
They can be very dangerous. My mom still has several tropical birds. Even when they are friendly and mean no harm, they can be easily startled and bite out of fear. Their cockatoo loves me and it gives me kisses. Once when it was kissing, one of the dogs ran by and hit the edge of the cage, it bit my nose HARD. That was a weird wound to explain for a while. I was lucky though, it could have taken it clean off if it had wanted. I definately would be very careful with a puppy and a parrot. |

Mika's not good with small animals:cry:. He hates the birds in the garden and he also killed a baby mouse:mad:. I have to watch him when he's out the back playing, although my rabbit got out of his cage some how and he didn't challenge him as this is a tough rabbit who growls at the dogs and they all stay clear of him :yelrotflm |
4 Attachment(s) Well, we have 10 birds, some small and 3 of them being the larger parrots. For the most part they all live in harmony with my dogs, but I wouldn't say they were buddies with any. Because of the dogs, my smaller birds do not have clipped wings, so they are up high out of reach. The larger ones, are not allowed on the floor, but on occasion have been startled and landed close to one of the dogs, the dogs seem pretty nervous when actually that close and no one has been bitten or anything. The exception is our Indian Ringneck, Blue. She is very aggressive, and is not afraid of much. When I let her out in the evenings, she likes a certain spot in the kitchen and has no fear of walking around on the floor playing with a pop can. The dogs have all been nipped at least once by her, and don't mess with her at all, lol. She is not a big bird, little bit bigger than a cockatiel, but thinks she is much larger. Here's some pics. |
My Umbrella Cockatoo and Yorkie "play" together on the floor, supervised of course. It is histerical to watch. Molly always steals her toys and runs away and Pearl (U2) chases her to get it back. I also have a Senegal that I think would eat my Molly if I let her. I think maybe in the "bird world" it might be the same as with little dogs. They don't know that they are little! lol:aimeeyork |
I've seen it before My guy would eat the bird tho lol. |

Wow your parrots are all beautiful, what a lovely bunch you have!! My conure thinks he is huge and he likes to walk on the floor. I put my bigger dog away or put a muzzle on her because she would love to snatch him up and he is not afraid of her and will taunt her all he can. We used to let him have free roam with Stormy because neither cared for each other. Now he has limited time out supervised of course for his own protection. We let his wings grow back in. He just loves to sit on the couch pillow and hang out with us watching tv. |
