Hair Question Maddie is almost 15 weeks old. She is 1/2 yorkie, 1/2 Maltese, but everything about her seems to be Yorkie. Her hair is probably about 2 inches long right now and BLACK (on her back). She has a very thick, cottony coat. Anyway, it seems like it is growing out a blue color at the roots. A couple millimeters right up to her skin are a lighter color than the rest of her hair. Is this her adult coat growing in? Do I need to cut off all the black once the lighter comes in more? I am planning to grow her hair out until I can see if it will be a good quality. |
That's so neat how her hair is growing out a blue color.:D If she has thick cottony hair, I don't think her hair texture will change much, even tho she's still a puppy. If you plan on growing her hair, you don't have to do anything to the blk tips. Some yorkies & morkies (in this case) look like they need a dye job. Lol |

Any tips on how to make sure it grows properly? Any idea when it's gonna be nice and long? |
Love your avatar pic It's a plus if she lets you brush her & she likes brushing time. I grew Mimi's hair bc she lets me brush her & she's used to it. Momo on the other hand has thick cottony tangles easily fur & he hates brushing. So, in the warmer months, I keep him in a short cut on the body. As for tips on growing her hair, keep doing what you're doing. Make sure she also gets a good balanced diet. Foods w/omegas to keep her skin & hair healthy. I think in about 6 months, it'll be nice & long.:) |
She's too young to get her adult coat. That will happen later in her first year. If it's cottony now, though, it won't get silky. You'll find it's pretty hard to keep a cottony coat long. Most do better in puppy cuts. |
2 Attachment(s) My MILs morkie has silky hair but is all silver and white- when he was a baby he looked like a yorkie almost exactly. His body frame is now built more like the yorkie but he definitely had the maltese colors and face. I will attach pics. |
Ohhh, he's beautiful!:D |
4 Attachment(s) Heres my Morkie Ayla, She is 8 months and is golden / white multi. just starting to turn silky but is cotton weres there is white side is. It matts up all the time. I have cut her down 2 times so far, but I am ready for grow out. I Take special care around bum and legs armpits and where harness is, this is the wrose areas. Brush every day, after training and or walks. I take a flea comb to make sure I got them all. It can take hours to get the matts out if you miss a day or 2. The best spray conditioner for tangles is johnson and johnson baby detangeler. I spray on the matts only. Ok I have never uploaded on a thread yet so hope I didnt make them to small. 1. pic young 3 weeks or so lots of yorkie colors. 2. pic is when she is 4 months old she is I thought at the time darkening up. I was hoping she would turn golden. 3. pic I thought she was loosing her hair getting bald spots, but this was her new hair color. Almost 5 months old in this pic. 4. pic is her after color golden. It took 2 days to cut her hair lots of treats and patience. lol and teeth marks She is just turning silky I have added flax seed oil to her a few months ago.
