Have anyone travel to Hawaii with Yorkie? I am thinking about taking our Yorkie Sammy to Hawaii for our wedding so he can be part of it since he was involved with the proposal. Has anyone ever flew their Yorkie to Hawaii or experienced something similar? Apparently, Hawaii is very strict and requires to hold the dog when going thru customs. :( From what I read, they need to hold the dog for at least 5 days or something...and won't be able to fly there in the cabin with us. :thumbdown. On the way back to the US, it's a lot simpler though. Now I am debating if it's even worth it anymore since we'll only be in Hawaii for 3 days. But we really really want him to be there in our wedding. We already got him a little tux. :aimeeyork Please anyone, any suggestions? |
i didn't take my yorkie with me when i went to Maui. When i was on the less public beaches there were lots of people with their dogs there tho. They were all having a good time and nobody seemed mad about the dogs being there. I think LuvMySissy goes to Maui a lot. She might have taken her yorkies with her a few times but i'm not sure. |
I'll be interested in seeing more, since I would like to take Thor to Hawaii with me. The only thing I know about it is that Hawaii is a rabies-free island. |
No matter what you do, it's AT LEAST a 120-day procedure prior to admission: http://hawaii.gov/hdoa/ai/aqs/aqs-checklist-5.pdf Perhaps you can have a "bachelor party" or a "rehersal dinner" that your pup can attend Stateside before you leave? It's a real trial to comply with the rules, even if your dog is a Hawaiian resident and just goes to the Mainland with the family for a visit - if he wants to return. To say they're "strict" is an understatement. I wish there was better news ... |
Here are the guidelines for the 5 day quarantine....depending on when you plan to travel it may already be too late to start the process. http://hawaii.gov/hdoa/ai/aqs/aqs-checklist-5.pdf |
THAT's a bummer. |
Having lived in Hawaii for 20 years, I can appreciate that the state has remained free of rabies. I do feel the quarantine rules are "over kill", but none the less I'm happy our residents, and pets don't have to worry about rabies. However, there is another reason to re-think taking your pets to Hawaii. Who would want to subject their precious furbabies to a loonnggg flight in a cage (not in cabin anymore), in the luggage compartment worrying about climate control, potty control, feeding, etc. and just plain freak them out? I wouldn't. And even if you would put them thru that scary ordeal, you get them here and find we don't have pet friendly hotels, and they won't have much fun if you do any of the activities most visitors do like snorkeling, scuba diving, boating, dining out, going to the beach (those that do allow dogs are frequented by locals who primarily have big dogs, many many pitbull mixes). Believe me, if dogs had a say in this, they'd rather be at home, cozy, safe and comfortable. |
we're planning to do this in a year....thanks for letting me know. I'm just sad they have to hold him there for the quarantine area. :animal36 Plus, he won't be able to really enjoy Hawaii :( I'm aware of the Sammy having to get another shot too. |
Pets can't fly in the cabin to Hawaii? |

IMO, it is best to leave him home. It is a huge, scary ordeal. Is it really worth it? I think most dogs would be happier with some family for a few days. While it's nice that Hawaii is rabies free, the polices are way more than overkill to me. |
There is no way in this world I would allow anyone (other than family) keep my dog for 5 days... Especially a quarintine. I would not fly to Hawaii and leave my baby in the back where it is VERY hot with the luggage. It would not be fair to the dog to go through all that just to be present at your wedding. JMHO If you try, you can probably come up with something very creative to include him... Maybe an event before the wedding? Have a picture of him/her at your ceremony? |
Yeah, a five day quarantine for a three day stay... will he even be able to be with you for the ceremony if he does come? It sounds like you would have to stay longer just to get him out. |
I have never taken my girls with me to Hawaii, but I have looked into what it would entail. The quarantine has been lifted, but the paperwork has to be completed and certified by your vet and then received by the control folks on Oahu within 10 days of your arrival. It is up to you to confirm receipt and that everything is okay. Then, you must fly to Oahu - pet MUST fly in cargo and will be unloaded by the animal staff and taken to their animal control area to be checked out, where it must be picked up by 5:00pm. It not picked up ty 5:00pm you are charged a daily fee and then they will keep them a minimum of 24 hours. Once you've done all this stuff in Oahu, I do not believe there is any issue taking them to another island. I'm not sure whether they allow them in cabin for the flight home..... Hope this helps. |

I don't think an emotional support letter works for Hawaii because of their medical certification process. It must be a true service dog.... |
Sorry to keep asking, but why do they have to fly in cargo? Is that standard for quarantine-type measures? |

I think it's a very nice idea, but I think maybe you should locate the best doggie spa you can find in your area and give your pup a "vacation" while you do yours. We have "spas" here, not just kennels (that would be an insult!) that *I* wouldn't mind checking into :D |
Thank you everyone for such support and opinions. I definitely have awhile to think about what we want to do. It just sucks he won't be in our wedding picture in Hawaii. :( |
I''ve been planning a long trip to Hawaii for a while, and thinking how much Thor would enjoy it. :( Warm water, swimming pool, hiking.... Even snorkling, I have a little doggie life vest for him so he could float around with me. I can live with the paperwork, but I would never subject him to a ride in cargo. Would a therapist letter definitely not work? Also, just hypothetically... um, what if you snuck your dog in with your luggage? Couldn't you go through security check with the dog out, and then put him in his own bag before he got to the gate? Not that I would ever do anything like that. |
If you want him in your wedding picture do the following. Buy a stuffed animal about his size, put it where you'd want your furbaby to sit and have a graphic artist photoshop him into the picture after you return. |

I love this IDEA!!! I'm gonna tell my Fiance |
I don't want to push this, but is your carry on luggage xrayed too? I've seen people walking their dogs around the airport, though those dogs had reservations on flights. |

when leaving hawaii they thoroughly check your luggage and carry on because they don't want you taking anything out of the state. My aunt tried to take seed pods out and they wouldn't let her. they scan the bags and open them up if they see anything suspicious. |

Most people that are walking their dogs through the airport usually have registered therapy dogs, so they don't have to travel in a carrier. |
