Cats and Dogs Hi I am a brand new Yorkie mommie to Sydnee. We brought her home yesterday. I got her for Christmas. She is now 8 weeks old. I have read what everyone said about the puppy food and tried researching it and I am going to try the Innova, but my problem is this because the Vet is closed right now. I have a cat also named Elmo and he was kenneled while I was out of town and of course everything seemed fine. Tonight I saw him scoot his butt across the floor and I am concerned he may have worms, and I am wondering if Sydnee can get these from Elmo? She is so tiny only about 8 oz. and I really don't want her to get ill. Is there something I can do till I can get to the Vet? thanks in advance, Viki |
Hi and a big welcome to Yorkie Talk and also, congratulations on adopting Sydney. She is soooo young. It is usually the norm that such tiny babies as the one you have normally do not leave the breeder's until they are atleast over a pound and 10-13 weeks sometimes longer depending on the puppies weight. Did the breeder by chance tell you why she was letting the puppy go so early? 8 ounces is extreamly small. Contact your vet and ask for some Nutrical. This is a health suppliment to get sugar levels normal so the puppy does not crash. (Hypoglycemia). This could happen to a puppy within days or sometimes even hours after arriving to it's new home. Try to make sure your puppy is eating and drinking and staying warm and rested. I do not know about a cat transferring worms to a dog? However, if you see any problems with Sydney before you vet opens you might want to consider a animal hospital near by. It can be very dangerous for these tiny ones. They can be ok one minute then be crashing the next... Keep us posted on Sydney's progress and again welcome! |

I wanted to say that I do know that cats can get worms from other cats who are infected so I would think that puppies/dogs could too. I don't mean to scare you, but you need to take your kitty to the vet and get treated or buy worm medicine at a store-Walmart carries worm meds. I have successfully wormed my cat before using this medicine from the store, but I can't remember the name of it. It did work though. Again welcome! I have been reading this forum for awhile and everyone here is so very nice and knowledgable. |
thanks Thanks a lot for the warm welcome Schatzie and Wench75. I plan on taking the baby and Elmo to the Vet in the am as soon as they are open. My only question is how will I know if Sydnee is having a problem with hypoglycemia. Are there symptoms? I mean she is eating and I have the food paste for her that the breeder gave me if she was having a problem eating. She has been doing really well and drinking water also. Not large amounts but she is so small that I don't want to over feed her. She did eat a bit much earlier this evening and proceeded to up chuck and I only gave her a small amount or at least I thought it was a small amount. Feeding a chow/shepard mix which is 80 pounds is quite a bit different than feeding Sydnee I can tell you. OMW I am so scare I am going to do something wrong haven't felt like this since I brought Tristen home from the hospital over 19 years ago. Feeling a bit overwhelmed geeze hope I haven't done anything so far that will harm her especially since she upchucked. Viki |

He also told me to be sure the pup eats, and doesn't go more than 8 hours without food and water. This is the first time I've had a small dog also. We've only had 2 dogs before who were chows, and have had 3 cats for years now. It is so different taking care of these little sweeties. Just keep an eye on her, and the throwing up if she continues get her to the vet immediately. And buy some Karo Syrup. :) |
Pups that are having a hypoglycemic episode usually have gums that are greyish or white. As long as the pup has pretty pink gums, she should be alright. I saw nutrical at Petco yesterday. I was surprised because I thought it was only available at the vets office but I was mistaken. I'd keep the new pup isolated from anywhere the cat has been. I would think that the worms could be passed from one to the other unfortunately. Welcome to our humble lil' community! |
Definately watch the gums. Also another sign of hypoglycemia is the puppy acting lathargic. head flops over, wabbly, I would wake up in the middle of the night if possible and feed her just to make sure. Also like they said before invest in some Nutrical also their is Nutri stat same thing just cheaper. On another note, Congratulations on your new puppy. |
