Is this normal play? My Yorkie and my Westie often interact in the evening. My husband says it is playing. It looks a little like wrestling, their mouths are wide open. They both make a little sound (not a growl) and they put their open mouths on each other, but they never bite down. Then--this is wierd-- in the middle of all this, they stop and they blow air out of their noses while shaking their heads....it's just like a person blowing his nose....what is this???? |
sounds like normal play to me. Dogs can appear really rough when they are playing. Growling, snorting, sneezing, and barking are all noises mine makes when she plays. Dogs only have their mouths to play with so that's what they use to hold on to the other dog. Its good that your two don't bite down, as it shows they have both learned bite inhibition. |
A lot of playing is "practice fighting", so it can be hard to tell the difference, and sometimes one turns into the other. During play, dogs often take breaks to remind everyone that it IS just play. It sounds like play if they are not biting down. There is actually a word for this type of open mouth jousting, I forget what it is. |
My female Jack Russell Terrier and my 6 mo old female Yorkie play fight all of the time just like this. :) |
Sounds normal! When Jackson plays, they totally sound like they could be killing each other but they're just having fun. And Jackson always does that blowing air out of nose thing... it's like a sneeze, really lol. Here's a video of Jackson as a pup playing with my mom's dog, as he got older, he got a lot rougher than this though... |
1 Attachment(s) My dogs play like this all the time. I caught a picture where it looks rather scary, but it is just play. They are having fun. Luna will stand up and wrap her front legs around Maggie's neck and they will play bite. Don't you just love Kohls? lol back to school YAY! |
That's about half of Buster & Bailey's day! We were concerned at first as well, but so long as their tails are wagging & not between their legs, they let up when one yelps (it's bound to happen that someone bites too hard every now & then), and if one wants to stop & get a drink or something & the other one lets them, it's all just play. We can't hardly watch TV anymore because the dogs are always playing very loudly, standing on their hind legs & looking so vicious...my husband calls them "our attack dogs", very jokingly of course, because they are the sweetest dogs ever that just love to play! |
yeah, it's that sneezing thing that is really strange. At first I was wondering if they were allergic to each other. They do it at the same time! |

This is exactly what takes place when Toby and my parent's dog play together....I was concerned at first too, but you get used to it. I'm still a little overprotective of my little man though. ;) My dad is worried that the neighbors are going to think that there are dog fights going on because they sound just like the video of Carmon & Jackson. :) |
My Toby and Lola are going at it as I type this. I worried at first, since he is 2 years older than she is and 3 pounds heavier. I shouldn't have...she sometimes bullies him. They spend most of their day doing this. On the rare occasion they get carried away, one of them will yip a little and it scares the other one so much they stop. I understand about the TV though...they sure can get noisy for little things!!:D |

Dogs love to wrestle each other, my sons loved to do it too, but it would usually end in a fight! I've never seen that happen with dogs, though. :D |
Our two are wrestlers! They love to go after each other! Sounds normal to me, if you think they are getting out of control just tell them easy. Good luck! |
Rockie plays the same way with my nieces dog Nasal. At first we thought Rockie was attacking:rolleyes: but it was dogs play. They can get really involved into the action too.:p lts all in the fun of it. |
