Can anyone help me? I am looking to buy a yorkie and visited a breeder today. While there, a customer of her's visited with his 6 month old (4.5 lb) yorkie and I overheard her tell him that the dog would not get any larger. Is this true? |
With my yorkie Missy, her growth rate slowed drastically after the 6 mos mark. She just filled out a little bit after that. |
Hes probably for the most part done growing he may fill in some |
My two stayed the same weight but they did get longer and taller and lost the chubby pup look. |
Wrigley weighed about 3 1/2lbs at 6 months and ended up being 6lbs at a little over a year and she's NOT overweight! It shocked all of us because she weighed 1.13lbs when we got her at 12 1/2 weeks! |
They are not done growing at 6 mos. My Mia weighed 3 lbs. at 6 mos and today weighs 5 lbs. |

It's hard to guess a Yorkie's weight unless you see both parent's and then you can estimate it. However, it has been known that an above the standard, which is 7lbs, can occur. If you take the puppy's weight at three months, double it and add an extra lb you can estimate the adult weight. There are still times this does not work so it's really up to the parent's weight that can best give you the answer your looking for. |
I believe that Yorkies finish growing at different times based on their lineage. If you have a good breeder they are probably the best source for your puppy's growth. Sadie really hasn't grown since about 6 or 7 months. My breeder told me that based on her lines she probably wouldn't grow any more but will probably fill in some. Sadie will be a year old next week and that has held true. She weighed 3.8 pounds at 7 months and she now barely makes 4 pounds. I think she will continue to fill in a little bit over the next year. When I got her at 15 weeks the breeder told me she would probably be between 4 and 4 1/2 pounds. A good breeder knows their dogs but also realizes that they are all individuals and there will be some who don't follow the norm for their lines so they don't make promises. |
small breed dogs normally grow till age one. |
