Nanny Cam vs. Day Care Due to some changes at home my dogs (5 yrs and the other 5 months) are left alone at home for HOURS. I decided to set up a webcam at home to keep an eye on them (well the 5 month old). She is being kept in a large pen in the kitchen and the 5 yr old is free in the family room and able to access a doggie door. Yesterday was the first day I watch it with the eyeball on the puppy, instead of being soothing, it was sad. :( She slept the majority of the day, jumped trying to get out and just looked around. Today I took her to daycare because I will be gone longer. But today I am watching the 5 year old. That dog has sleep for 6 hours going from one end of the couch to the other he looks so lonely. I didn't send him to daycare today because he is not dog or cage friendly. What do you do with your dogs ALL day while you are at work? Of course daycare everyday is to costly. My dogs will only be like this for about a month then will be able to be checked on throughout the day again by my hubby. |
I have always felt awful about leaving my dogs at home too. This summer I have been lucky enough to be allowed to bring my yorkie to work with me...and she still sleeps all day! :) But i do give then kongs stuffed with peanut butter and frozen or give them some sort of puzzle toy/chew. |
My previous job use to let me bring one dog on friday, but not my new job :(. I am going to get those kongs..thanks your note helped!! |
I feel bad about leaving Kimbo too. I'm thinking that I leave him with everything he "needs" but what he really wants is me. I wouldn't want to look at a nanny cam because I would be soooo sad if he looked lonely. I try to imagine him happy and playing and that keeps me sane!! |
What kind of set up do you have to be able to watch them? I would like to set one up for my pups. :) |
Blade I know I thought I would want to watch them all day but it is depressing the puppy looks so sad and just wanted out of her pen and my 5 yr old slept on the couch ALL DAY looking depressed. The set up I have is: On my iphone I downloaded an app named - Log Me In (it may be available just to download). You also download the app on your Mac/PC - I have a Mac and create a free account With the webcam on my Mac open Photo Booth and there you go. I can open the app on my iphone or at my PC at work. Its pretty cool and all free :) |
If it's just a month that's doable! Bandit goes to daycare one day a week. Other than that they stay home crated all day:(....but Scott comes home on his lunch break and walks them and plays with them quickly. Also, he's home by 4 so they're not in there TOO long. |
I am very fortunate. My DH works nights so he arrives home about two hours after I leave. My daughter is still home during that time. I get home before he leaves for work so my dogs are not home alone much. I try to take Cooper with me when I go anywhere on the weekends. I do have two dogs and they keep eachother company when all the humans are gone. |
Makes Me Sad This thread is making me sad:cry:. Right now Sophie has my daughter's Dad for company all day long due to the fact that he is on workers comp. But I'm preparing to seperate from him which means that Sophie will be home alone until my 16yr old gets home from school. I must make time to check in on her during lunch 2-3 times per week.:aimeeyork |
I am lucky enough where I am able to take Peanut with me to work everyday, but he does the same he would do at home. Sleep! :D I think it does suck for them to be home alone, but as long as you give them enough space and toys I think they are fine.. and you have to come home and play/walk them!! :D |
Scooter goes to daycare three times a week. I work full time so I can't always go home at lunch to let him out and play with him. I do think it is important for him to have interaction every few hours so I always have something set up. When I can't go home to play, my second cousin goes over to play with him. My second cousin is a student and has a much more flexible schedule. I pay her similar to an actual dog sitter ($15/per visit but she stays more than an hour - what college kid doesn't need extra cash). He enjoys the company and it breaks up his nap. He sleeps the rest of the time when I am not there. The attention helps him stay calm. Before my second cousin could come over, one of the vet techs at our vets office would come play with him on her lunch break. Maybe you can look into getting a family member or friend to come check on your babies. Working full time is hard when you wish you could stay at home with them but if someone goes over, you can at least know they aren't alone and bored all day. All it takes is 30+ minutes and they will be happy. Doggie daycare is great cause they are surrounded by friends but since one of your dogs can't, I suggest finding someone to come over and have some interaction with them. Good luck! |
When I'm home Capone sleeps most of the day anyway so when I'm not there I know he's probably sleeping. My roommate lets him out of his pen to use the bathroom and run a little for exercise. I think he's fine. On days when I'm gone for a really long time I take him to daycare so he can use the bathroom and have some interaction. |
