New Puppy-pee pads or outside? :) Just thought I would get some suggestions from other yorkie owners. I have a 13 wk female that is using pee pads in her ex pen and I am also trying to get her to go outside. I live in a rural area, 3 acres not fenced, so when we go out she has to be leashed. Last night we had coyotes and an owl that decided to be out at the same time we were, so I am reconsidering trying to train her to outside and just using the pee pads inside. Where I live I it snows and I am starting to think this may become a problem also because I would have to leash her and stand in the wind and cold for along time before she will go. I have only had her a week so we are just starting all this but it will take about an hour of coming in and going out to get her to potty outside. The problem is I am sort of old school and not a big fan of having any animal going potty inside. Where do I keep the pee pad when she is transitioning to more freedom? Right now she has an expen in the kitchen, but I don't want to have a pee pad in my kitchen for the next 12-15 years. How often do you change the pad? I notice it starts to smell after a few visits and I always pick the poo up immediately and flush it. Open to suggestions, let me know what you think. |
inside on the pad is safer and easier on her bladder; young puppies have small bladers and need to go often. |
Until she is using the pee pad all the time without accidents the pee pad has to be in a place where she can easily find it. After shes trained you can put it in a more out of the way place and teach her to go there. |
I'm new fairly new to this issue too. Rily is 4 mo. and is doing really well with the pee pads. However, he goes other places too. Seems he feels that any rug is a pee pad...ugh. But I feel we will resolve this issue and he is still very young. I keep the pad in my bathroom and change it every morning. |
I would train outside now while its warm out. Eventually she will start to go as soon as you take her out so by the time its winter you won't be standing out there forever waiting for her. This is what i did with mine. I got her in july at 13 weeks and we immediately started pottying outside no matter what the weather. I carried her outside to the spot i wanted her to use and set her down. She had a 4 ft leash on so she couldn't go very far from me. I stood in one spot and she only had that little area to go in. As soon as she peed or pooped she got a treat. She learned very quickly but there were times i stood out there in the rain for 30 minutes before she would pee. By winter, even in the deep snow, she was running out there real fast, peeing/pooping, and then running back inside. |
i have a 7 week old yorkie and she's outside training, it's harder somtimes due to weather such as (in the rain at 3am) but it's worth it to not have to clean it up all the time, we have a chicken wire fence built to keep her secluded in our yard away from the rest of the animals and other things out there, but she's also never left alone out there either, it's for her and my safety together. she goes almost on command and we've only had her for three days, she hears go potty and starts her sniffing process. we are also bell training her to tell me when she's got to go out. they don't learn overnight, but eventually they will learn to use the bell and go outside and then they learn to potty on command when told "go potty" or another command you decide on...try reading housetraining for dummies, it gives a detailed overview of all the types of training both indoor and outdoor training... try a local library or petco petsmart for a copy. thought i might add: she doesn't use a leash/harness yet, she's too little to learn to walk on it, she just gets picked up and put outside in her pen area and goes there every time, if i'm having a hard time of her going i'll either ignore her until she goes, or i'll take her into the big yard to play and she'll eventually go out there before playing like crazy...she's really good about going outside though. |
I trained Sadie inside on pee pads since we lived in DC when I got her. I didn't want us to be outside late at night by ourselves. Yorkies are difficult ones to potty train anyway you do it, but inside can be very convenient once they are trained. I did not kennel train but have heard this is the best way to potty train them even when using pee pads. Now Sadie can go anywhere with me and I don't have to worry about taking her out to go potty. |
Mine go outside in warm weather and pee pads when cold or rainy. I keep pee pad in bathroom and change it everyday. |
