Is 2 or 3 pounds healthy? There is an AKC Yorkie breeder near me that has a female Yorkie puppy. The Yorkie is only 5 weeks old and won't be ready for another 7 weeks. She said the puppy is small and may only be 2 or 3 pounds as a dog. Is this a safe and healthy weight for a Yorkie? She said that she will be taking the puppy to the vet soon for a thorough checkup. She will be giving me the name of the vet and phone number, but I wanted to check with experienced Yorkie owners. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Kirby |
Hi, I have a six month of yorkie who currently weighs 2 pounds and will finish off around 2 1/2. She is totally healthy. She is very fragile and requires a lot of attention. You will need to keep her away from small children. If the breeder is AKC I would think the puppy is ok. You could ask them to a bile acid test. |
Thank you, ShanDwi. That makes me feel better. We do not have children, so that's not a worry. Thank you again. :aimeeyork |
There are yorkies that are very healthy at 2-3lbs. I think it is important that the extra tests are done. I would also recomend a Bile Acid test be done after 20 weeks. They really do require alot of extra attention and time, making sure that they are eating well and frequently. And watching that they don't get underfoot or sat on. Also when they get sick they can go downhill or dehydrate quicker so it almost always means a precautionary trip to the vet. Just because it is small doesn't mean that it will be unhealthy, but it does mean that there is alot less room for error. Oh, and AKC is registry to verify the lineage of your dog, it will not tell you that the dogs are healthy or that the breeder is ethical:) |
make sure the puppy is over two pounds before you have the bile acid. they have to draw 3cc's blood and it could deplete the blood supply. We had a little one die on here last year from this. Also altho many, many tiny ones are extremely healthy, some of them will have an open fontnal. That is usually why they are so small and don't grow. Not all of course but it is fairly common. I love the itty bitty ones but would be scared to death i would step on it. I had one puppy that little and when I sold her, I couldn't wait for her to go to her new home.:) |
I have a tiny one. She is 4 months and still not quite 2 lbs. yet. She is completely healthy...just very small. Like you, I knew in advance that the puppy I had chosen was going to be small. Her breeder warned me that Callie was a very picky eater too, and I had to wait a bit longer before I got to bring her home. But it was well worth the wait. She is FULL of energy and such personality. I have been very careful with her...making sure she eats right and stays current on her shots and vet visits. But her tiny-ness has not hurt her at all!!~~ She is just perfect to snuggle with and tuck away in my purse when I got shopping~:p |
Sugar has just finally gained about a half of a pound to reach 3 pounds :D When we got her 5 months ago you could feel her whole skeleton  She has advanced gum disease and her former owners had 2 puppies and 4 boys PLUS she was PG with a Downs baby......nobody noticed poor Sugar wasn't eating:( That being said....I worry every day if she leaves part of her 1/4 cup of food if she will be okay throughout the day. I have a Son who is 6'6 and she is lint to him...so that is also a concern. Would I ttrade her for a sturdier dog after coming to love her? NEVER ;) |
Thank you, thank you, thank you, everyone for your replies. I've read each one, and I now have a better understanding of questions to ask the breeder and how to care for her. Thank you again. Sincerely, Kirby:) |
