Difference between and silky and a yorkie? Hi, I was doing a search on yorkies and came across some silky terriers, they look just alike! Can you tell me what the difference is? Are the Silky's bigger in weight? thanks so much. Brianna |
Basically the only difference between a Silky and a Yorkie is that their coats don't keep growing (non shedding) like a Yorkie, their nose is a bit larger and they are built a bit more solidly (Yorkies are suppose to be between 4-7lbs and a Silky is 7-10lbs). They make a good watch dog. If you talk to Silky owners the outstanding quality that you hear is that the Silky is a real character. |

I sometimes wonder this question too. Starsky is a little bigger than an average Yorkie, he is 8.5 lbs. How can you make sure you weren't told you have a Yorkie when it is really a Silky. I think they look the same. I sure hope he is a Yorkie. |
To me Yorkies and Silkies are so similar, is hard for me to see the difference. So i was wondering the same thing, How can I differentiate them? |
I found this link where it describes the two breeds. |
The fact that the general public does not know the difference works to the sellers advantage. Many puppy millers use Silkie females and tiny Yorkie studs so they get more puppies, have fewer c-sections and will be bred time after time. Money is easier to make on this combo..and dishonest people do it every day!! |
Why do silkies have fewer c-sections? |
Wow, Rini, i didnt even though of that. I cant believe that some people will be so low to do something like that, but then again there are so many dishonet people out there. |

Wow. That would explain a lot about Chewy...his litter was so big that they couldn't nurse (not enough docking ports). People always are surprised that he's a Yorkie (that's what his papers say, and both his parents are listed). Most think he's a Silky when they see him. Do silky's...oh, yeah they do...Come in SILVER and Tan? Hmmm...I might be on the wrong forum! |
Silkies have all the colors of Yorkies . |
