color and coat Hi, don't know if I have posted in the right section to get the best response but here goes....I currently have an 11year old male yorkie that is black and tan and has a cottonie coat. I would like to have another with these same attributes. Is it possible to tell at 8 weeks if a pup will have these specific colors and coat type in adulthood? thanks! Lisa |
I thought I would try to answer your question since no one else has :) I've only had 1 Yorkie and he's only 8 mos old but as far as I know and from things I've learned on here, there really is no way to tell either of these from a puppy. All Yorkie puppies are born black and tan and have a more cottony coat. It's almost impossible to tell if the hair will stay cottony or turn silky or if it will stay black and tan or turn blue/gray/silver and tan/gold. Like I've heard someone say on here.... Yorkies are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get :) |
thanks for being sooo nice and attempting to answer my question!!! when I first got chip at 8 weeks, I ran into a breeder and she said she could tell he was going to keep his puppy colors and his cottonie coat, and he did, so naturally I thought there was a way to tell. lisa I guess as newbie I ask stupid questions. |
Well I've had Gucci for over 6 years and when I first got him he was black and tan with what seem to be "grey" under his coat. The breeder told me he'll be a greyish color like his mother and he turned out that way. Same with his brother. I've also seen pups in here with his same coloring as a puppy which turn his color as an adult. Here is as a pup. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...OnTheComp6.jpg And as an adult: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...i/DSCN0012.jpg |
The parents coat type would be a good indicator |

Usually at about 4 months you would get a better idea of coat texture. Over six months you will also have a better idea if it will stay a dark colour or not. |
