My puppy looks sad:( or is it her way of warming up? I am brand new at this so Im not sure exactly how this works, but I need advice. Im panicking a little. I bought a "teacup" ( i know theres no such thing but she sold it as a teacup-- she weighs 3.5 lbs) yorkie from pjs pet centre on wednesday night, shes 5 1/2 months old, and I know pet shops are the worst place to purchase them but I fell in love with her. anyways she doesnt eat poo pee drink nothing, we take her out does bark just lie down wherever she is. occasaionally she'll get up or make you rub her belly but she crys a lot and has thrown up 3 times (maybe due to car rides, but the last time was just water), what do I do? |
it's very serious if she hasn't eaten since wednesday or drink; i suggest you take her back and you tell them that she is sick; unless you want to take her to the vet to see what's wrong. if she cries when you rub her tummy is because her tummy hurts; that's normal when the tummy is empty and no food is going in to absorb the stomach acid. did you try giving her a biscuit treat just to see if she eats it. however she seems sick and she might need professional help. good luck |
She actually ate just a little bit yesterday, just of the soft food but hardly anything, she pooed once, but like i think this is crazy shes not moving like barely barely is, and when i went down right now she curls up in a ball and hides her face, its like shes lethargic. But everytime I tell someone, including the vet, they say she is warming up. But like how can she be if she hardly moves, and she crys for everything and shakes like a leave:s |
and i tried giving her her treats she wont eat them, she just smells it, but i bought everything the pet shop gave her. the only thing she eats is her medicine:S |
what medicine are you giving her; its best if she eats something before giving the meds or it will upset her stomach; believe me i have been there with my dog. it's great that she ate the wet food; at least it has some water in it because she can get dehydrated without water. giver her nutrical that will give her some vitamins and some sugar for energy. what kind of wet food are you feeding her? if it's different than what the store gave her then she will have upset stomach; any diareha or just vomiting? i am surprised the vet is not concerned; did you stress that she's not eating and drinking for few days; because that's crucial and dangerous for the little one. you can also give her a little honey on your fingertip; that might increase her appetite and give her some energy; without food she can get hypoglycemia |
try tiny pieces of plain unseasoned boiled white meat chicken. Just to get her appetite going.... |
and maybe see if she will lick an ice cube so that u can some water in her..... Trust your instincts, u dont want this to get worse, puppies are so fragile |
yes definetly; you can boil some chicken breast or low fat hamburger meet and try feeding her that for a while until her tummy feels better. ask the doctor to give you some zantac liquid (antiacid) to help out her tummy feel better. |
That doesn't sound like she is warming up. Sounds like something is not right. I hope I'm wrong. I would definatly take her to the vet. If she doesn't seem right to you she probably isn't right. Go with your gut. |
you can also buy some baby pedialyte popsycles and freeze them and giver her a piece; that will hydrate her and replace whatever she lost. you can also see if she can drink some before freezing; my dog loves the blue color; whenever she's not feeling well and not eating i give her a piece and some vitamins and she will have more energy |
try the bland diet for a while until she feels better; that's boiled chicken or hamburger and white rice; no salt or seasoning and after she feels better switch her to high quality natural food; free of corn and byproducts; try orijien puppy food, which is made in canada :); i am in the process of switching my dog from halo to orijien 6fish and she ate it all up today; i was surprised that she loves it and it has high quality natural ingredients. you can buy a sample bag from certain pet stores for 2 or 3 dollars. Orijen |
Thank you guys all for your advice, I will be trying all of them for sure. I went to visit her right now and she just wants me to rub her belly. I gave her the honey like suggested but she would only lick it if i mixed it with her medicine which by the way is call energel. the wet food which she kinda ate the first day is wellness but she doesnt even look at it now, or the hard food for that matter:S My gut genuinely tells me there is more to this, the food I will try because maybe it is anxiety, but I s mean this food is supposed to be the one she ate at the pet store so I dont understand why she wont even go near it now to smell it:S On another note, I read this in a book today. It says there is no such thing as 'teacup' yorkies, and that if you have one it usually has health problems, genetic defects, and malformations and need medical care. Is that true? Like bella weighs 3.3 lbs and shes already 5 1/2 months, you think there's something wrong with her? sorry for all the questions Im just so worried and no one seems to acknowledge this, everyone says its simply anxiety:S |
The word "teacup" is used just to sell puppies. It's an advertising gimmick basically. Your pup is a decent weight. I don't think that size is the issue, it sounds like something is wrong with her. I think that maybe you should try a different vet, and I'd be trying to get the pet store to cover the costs. The boiled chicken and white rice is a good idea (or even just the chicken for now). How do her gums look? Are they pale? |
You can also do a skin pinch test to check her hydration. Just pinch the skin on top of her neck, if it takes 1-2 seconds to go back into place, she's ok. If the skin takes longer than 2 seconds or stays in place, she is dehydrated. I'm really concerned that she's not drinking much water. :( |
Thank you. To be honest Ive been going downstairs to check on her after every reply. I just gave her an ice cube and she liked it almost dry, and I mixed a little bit of her medicine with the honey cuz she wouldnt take the honey alone and she licked it off my finger (which is new to her because she never licks anyone). Im still very worried and I have a feeling I will be seeing another vet for a second opinion, first I wanna try some of the suggestions here. The problem is I bought her at a pet store, and when I call them Bella is just one in a million to them. But Im curious if she really ate there. Like shes really thin, maybe she didnt like the food there either. I dont know but Im gunna try everything because Im not settling with the notion that this is her way of settling in. This is my first pet, but I mean some of this is just common sense and regardless what the vet or the petstore say that this is just signs of anxiety, I can not stand by and watch my new puppy starve herself to death because of 'anxiety'. |
licked it almost dry**** (not liked it almost dry) oops |

i am just curious as why a 5 months old yorkie is being sold at the store; usually they are puppies when sold; like 10 weeks or so. i think 3.5 lbs for 5 1/2 months is kind of skinny; i remember when i had ava she was about 9 or 10 weeks and she weighed 3.5lbs; and let me tell you ; she wouldn't eat either ; she had a lot of problems. eventhough i spent a lot of money on her; i am glad i kept her because she needed me and she shows gratidute now. however, yours is 5 1/2 monts and let's hope she wasn't starving all that time. i would suggest another vet and tell them that she's not eating or drinking; let them take a blood test, urine test and poop tests. by the way is she urinating ok? how often? and how about her gum color; it should be pink; if it's white or pale then she needs immediate medical help. anyway, like the other person suggested i would get the petstore to pay for all the expenses; they should have a waranty on the dog's health. again i will question why a 5 1/2 months old yorkie was kept at the store? |
First...welcome to YT!! Now...get her to a vet!! something isn't wrong!!! she may be hypoglycemic...if you don't have nutrical (buy from your vet) rub a little kayro syrup on her gums. What color are her gums? Have you brought her for a vet check yet? I am very concerned for this little girl. 3 1/2 lbs for a 5 month old isn't a bad weight. My smallest, full grown, is only 4 1/2 lbs. But, something doesn't sound right to me here. There is a puppy mash that you can make to give her...I don't know the recipe but, it is posted here. You may want to ask one of our breeders, we have several seasoned breeders here that would be more than willing to help you out. PLEASE..PLEASE... get this little girl to a vet and if the vet you have says this is normal...IT ISN'T! bring her to another vet!! Good luck and I hope all goes well for her. Please keep us posted |
if u rub the honey right on her gumsn (instead of letting her just eat some) it will take effect quicker! Just lift up the side of her "lip" lol. Good luck and keep us posted!!! |
Update! Well today bella woke up i gave her some more ice like i did last night, and she peed twice (still no poo) i did give her some cottage cheese though just to get her apetite up, but i think her gums are pink like they should be, and shes not dehydrated because when i pulled her neck skin it went down right away. still im not settling with anything the vet said and the pet store, and i will be looking for a new one. the vet did do a poo sample but im going to get a blood sample with a urine one. if this stays this way by monday im taking her in. thanks again for everyones help, its good to hear real suggestions cuz up until yesterday what i was hearing i felt like i was alone and was really getting frustrated, especially cuz bella is my first dog and i dont want anything to happen to her:( |
glad to hear that bella is doing good; no poop because she's not eating much and her body will keep all the nutrients she needs. how about trying the boiled chicken or hamburger meat to see if she eats that; if not orijen dog food is usually apetizing for dogs; my dog is very picky and she gobbled the food right up. see if they have the 6 fish flavor; the stores sell a sample bag for 2 or 3 dollar. also to make sure she's hydrated you can giver her the baby pedialyte frozen pops; ice alone without food is not such great idea; she needs to have some vitamins and minerals going in too. also dont forget the nutrical gel for vitamin. good luck |
Hi there - you're right in asking questions - and I'm no expert but with her only weighing 3 lbs - bought at a pet store and not eating or drinking - I would take her to the vet asap. It does sound like something isn't right and little puppies can go down fast....she needs to eat and drink. 'Warming up' isn't a diagnosis - it's someones way of blowing you off- Good luck with your puppy - I hope she's going to be ok |
she started eating a bit, i mix her hard food in with cottage cheese (the vet told me thats good... correct me if im wrong) but i want her to go back on just dog food. my only concern now is that she only poos like once a day, and during the night. never with us. she does it on the pee pad but i mean is that normal its only once a day??? and she shakes a lot. like sometimes she'll be fine when im around but like if we take her outside or something she starts shaking. it could be that its a new setting but i was just wondering if its okay? she is also tired alot, it could be that shes a baby but again just wanted to confirm. shes my first dog, and i dont want anything to happen to her. i did all my research prior to getting her but nothing could prepare you for each individual dog, and if i talk to others they make me worried because i purchased her from a petstore and all but i cant correct what i did in the past, now thats she mine i wanna know what i can do moving forward in the best interest of my puppy! |
it's ok to poop once a day; and tha't s great that she's going by herself on the pee pad. if she's not eating much then she won't poop much; my dog eats 3 times daily and she poops once in the morning and once at night; so that's normal you can try giving her a piece of lettuce, baby carot or litle piece of apple without the skin; they usually like that and it might open her appetite. you and your puppy are doing great; keep up the good work. :) |
what does it mean when your puppy constantly rolls over for a tummy rub? someone told me it means they are being submissive and giving themselves up to whatever you want them to do...thats not true is it???? |
