Male yorkie needs to get a room! Well, Bernie is a neutered male, now about 18 months old. He's a great guy and everything....but he has these "special buddies" (mostly the long loofa type toys) that he really really loves. Loves them enough to put lipstick on them and bounce up and down on them. I had him neutered timely, I thought. He's done this for about a year now and my granddaughters are starting to be a little inquisitive about it. He used to have this "rabbit love buddy", but I threw it away, then he fell in love with the loofa's. He gets all worked up panting and junk. How do I break him of this? Throw away all of his love buddies or what? I hate to do that. Any advice short of giving him my Visa and sending him to the Marriott would be appreciated. |
I can't believe no one has advice on how to stop your male yorkie from humping. |
its gonna be hard to break now since he's been doing it for so long. Personally i do not tolerate this behavior at all and would have stopped it from the get go. Do you know the Cesar Milan noise? I use that to stop Morgan from doing any behavior i don't like. So immediately when you see him starting to do it, make the noise to get his attention and then redirect him to something else. Since you say he has a few loofa toys that he goes after always have one handy. When you see him starting his behavior make the noise, and then when he looks at you say good boy and throw another toy. Hopefully he'll go after that. If he just goes to that toy to hump it then its not going to work. Does he like anything else? food, belly rubs, tennis balls...etc? i think if that doesn't work then i'd have to take away his toys that he humps and not buy him any others that look like them. |
I don't think there is a way, that may be why no one is responding. I know Gucci does this as well. He has hedgehogs that he just ADORES! They are his special friends... I have tried saying no among other things and I just gave up. If you find out how let me know Quote:

My take on the situation. This is bad behavior, and it can be corrected. First of all take away the objects of his affection. Second. when you see him humping anything, giv him the Dog Whsiperer "Chhhhhtt" and a nip on the neck, and replace is love object with a rawhide or some object that he will not hump. Since it has been going on for some time, it might take a while to break the habit, but i believe that it can be done. You could even take him for a walk or play with him to release some energy. I hope that helps. |
Hahahha, Missy is a spayed female and she has a fav "love buddy". I just pick her up and set her to the side of her toy when she starts doing it. She stops then. |
THE NOISE MENTIONED! that DOES WORK to make them stop. They have to be trained to understand that the noise means stop what they are doing though. I know when I make a certain noise towards Gucci he will stop WHATEVER he is doing no matter what it is even the humping. I thought you meant to break the behavior entirely. Gucci still does it but I make the noise when I catch him and he will stop. Quote:

Ps I believe I would avoid belly rubs, that is what gets him into trouible. :D |

but seriously pookiebear, the method will work if you stick with it (minus the belly rubs apparently hahaha) |
I don't have this problem with my yorkies BUT I do have it with my 80 lb. english bulldog! I have bought him several beds and his first action is to bite the corner and show that bed all his passion LOL. Within 3 "rolls in the hay" so to speak, the beds are in shreads! I finally quit buying beds and gave him a blanket to sleep on. He ripped it to shreads too! FINALLY, my hubby had a moving blank which is super strong. I washed it and gave it to him (because I can't see him have nothing soft to sleep on) well, he has now made that blanket his wife. She has survived now for a few years with just some small damage to the corners. He has RUINED all my outside patio cuhions with this action! If he does it in front of me I stearnly say no but if nobody is there to watch it, I say go for it... Not like I can stop him anyways. |
Awe I couldn't do that to G-Bear, He sleeps and cuddles with his hedgies and also plays with them ALOT more than any of his other toys. They are his girlfriends but they are also his babies & he loves them to death and I couldn't take that from him. I'd rather just reprimand when need be... He usually only does it at night anyway... and when he does it repeatedly I DO REMOVE THE HEDGIES from the area until he can calm down. It usually works for him, but may not for other dogs... I think it only works because I've been doing it since he was little (he has had the hedgies since I got him with the exception of 2 he got for GE last feb.) Anyhow yeah that's why I don't take them away, I'm rambling so I'm off.. :) Quote:

All advice is well taken. I always tell him no when he engages in his little love fest, and he will usually stop, but I'd like it gone for good. I think I'm going to have to get rid of the little toys that "turn him on". So...out with the loofa's, and hopefully he won't fall in love with another type. Thanks to all you guys. |
