Spaying a Tiny Yorkie I have a six month yorkie who wears 2 pounds. Is it save to fix her??? I'm really nervous because of her size. |
I worked for a vet who raises yorkies. One was about 3.2 when she was spayed, the other was only 2.8lb or so--both did very well. The 3.2lber was almost a year old and she was in alot of pain afterwards. The other was about 6-7 months old, and I was worried she was going to go into heat--so she went ahead and did it--she rebounded very quickly, didn't seem like she hurt like the other one did. I would talk to your vet, some prefer to wait until a certain weight. Just make sure you do bloodwork and have an IV cath w/fluids the whole time the baby is under--it keeps the kidneys flushed and helps get the anesthetic out of their system faster. |
I just had Maddie spayed. I waited until she was about 9 months to do it. She weighs 2lbs and 8 oz and she did very well. I am sure that your little girl would do fine just find a vet that has had experience with the smaller ones. There is no harm in waiting for her to gain a little more weight. I know that there are a few other YT'ers that have also spayed their little ones, with no problems. I would make sure to do all the bloodwork before hand. And take all the extra precautions durring sugery. I am so glad that I had Maddie spayed. |
I had Missy spayed when she was 2.5 lbs. She didn't do well with the anaesthetic, they almost lost her. :( I'm not sure why she couldn't handle the anaesthetic, she had been put under twice before for leg surgeries. I'm guessing it's because my regular vet did the spay, whereas her other surgeries were done by a specialist. If I were to do it over again, I would be sure to find a vet that had alot of experience working on tinies. I think it's best to have them spayed, especially if they are tiny. You can't breed them anyways. The health benefits outweigh the risks IMO. Good Luck with your decision. :) |
Oops, just realized that Missy was 3 lbs when she was spayed. Sorry for the misinformation. |
I'm going to bump this, I know there are more people on here with tinies that will help you:) Good luck.:animal-pa |
