Please Help I am trying to introduce my fiance's new kitten to Emmett, but Emmett is not having it. He s trying to kill the kitten. He is being vicious. How can I make this madness stop??? |
LOL, sorry it is not funny, but I had to laugh....Are you keeping new time limited? Mary |
Yes, very limited. I tied Emmett's leash to the coffee table (he was wearing a harness) so I could sit the kitten in front of him. I finally had to just put the cat away after a few minutes because Emmett was frothing at the mouth and starting to wheeze because he was freaking out so much. I have to make this work because I promised my fiance he could keep the cat. I am almost crying because I don't know what to do. |
You could try putting the kitten in a room with the door closed. If there is a space under the door Emmett can sniff & in time adjust to the kitten's odor. Also, try getting the kitten's odor on a blanket, towel, etc., & let Emmett smell it. Might even make it part of Emmett's bed. This would be Step 1. |

Emmett knows the smell of the kitten, and thats the problem I think. See, they were strays that were born under the house. Emmett had been stalking them under there for weeks, and the mother for months. I think he want to finally attack the thing that he'd been hunting. I dont know what to do. |
Kitten problem My dog loves cats and always has, but I have read where most Yorkie's don't. I think they must think they are prey, such as a rat. I think the idea of getting the cat smell into your dogs bed might be a good one. I have had cats that did not like each other and wanted to fight under a door for a week or so and then all of a sudden they got along fine. Hopefully, it will just take time. Maybe you need to have a heart to heart talk with your dog about the cat. You might think this idea is nuts, but it can't hurt. |
Unfortunately kittens resemble just what Yorkies are supposed to hunt. Ellie goes crazy around cats also. I can't even let her see them or she goes after them. I think you will need a professional trainer at the least. |
Jackson always chased and barks at the cats at my dad's house (where we visit 3-4 days a week). He's just now to the point where he doesn't really care about them anymore, he's 10 months old. He actually was laying with the boy cat the other day, whom he never got along with. The cats were here first though so I dunno if that makes a difference. When the kitten gets a bit older, I would just let them be loose together, they should learn to get along or at least tolerate each other. Cats are smart, just make sure they have somewhere to jump, even if it's a counter or something, to get away from the dog. Whenever the dogs over at my dad's place start to chase the cats, the cats run or jump up high where they can't get them. |
we have two cats...one loves our dog and they play together daily, they truly like each other. The other cat HATES the dog, lies in wait for her...to which the dog finally figured out one cat is okay to play with and the other one has sharp claws and is to be avoided, thus she now walks a wide circle around him. Pets are like children IMO -- protect the little one until they can defend themselves...eventually, they'll work it out. -- I guess what I'm saying is keep them apart until the cat is old enough to defend itself. If a dog's smart it'll figure out the cat's claws are weapons coming at them faster than their little bodies can dive into for a bite. |
Lucy gets on well with our cat Fritz - as you can see from the pic for my avatar. I'd suggest you keep trying - slowly and a bit at a time. |
Thanks guys. I will try all of your advice. I will keep you up to date on how they are getting along. |
I have been trying for ever now with no positive results. Something terrible happened today. We tried to hold the kitten close to Emmett, and of course he was snapping at it... and then either he nipped the cats toe, or the cat's claw got stuck in its toe... but blood was flying everywhere and my fiance started freaking out. He tried to hit Emmett but I was protecting him. Emmett cant help hating the cat, it is his nature. He wants to hunt it. What am I going to do??? I am in tears now. I can't stand this fighting. I wish my mom had never found the cat because it is making my life awful. Now my fiance is mad at Emmett for the incident today and things will be bad between us for God knows ho long. What am I going to do? |

I made a typing error in my fury while writing my above post about the incident, and since I am now too late to edit it I am going to correct myself here! I meant to say something like this Quote:
I don't want the cat to scratch Emmett, because then Emmett would fight the cat back and one of them might be killed or hurt really badly. I wish there was a way to solve this. |
