Munchie is almost house trained! He hardly never uses the bathroom in the house now! I take him outside about 3-4 times a day when it use to be after he gets up, plays drink water and ect. But im still kind nervous to let him go where he wants in the house without me there. Also at night he goes without using it. He sleeps in the bed with me or in his crate. I scared to let him on the floor to sleep where he wants thinking he is going to get up late and use it on the floor. But im so happy im not cleaning up poo and pee all the time. |
Congratulations! It's so nice when they finally start to get it. I would err on the side of caution giving him more freedom, it's better not to give him the chance to fail. Let the habit get rock-solid before relaxing the boudries. |

Same with Scruffs and I!! Wait a minute just Scruffs that came out funny. I'm house trained :P. The past month we have only had one accident. I did it again! Well I guess it is my fault so that's why I say "we." I trust him a lot more than before. I think he finally got that he has to go outside. Since he doesn't sneak down and go anymore he just waits! Yay i'm so proud! |

That's great!!! |
thanks guys!!! |
It's great when they crack it. Alfie has a free run of the house, he lets us know when he wants to go outside, we can leave him in all day and he will hang on and dive outside like a rocket when we get home. He is just one of the family. |
Are we allowed to ask questions here too? Anyways, how long does it really takes to potty train the yorkie? I am looking for one, a puppy preferably, and i read so many different things about them. I found great information browsing but this would be a concern for me. I want to be sure of what i may be getting into. Can you give a time frame of how long it takes to get one potty trained? Thanks. |
Great News.... |
It can vary pretty widely, but you can reasonably expect it to take up to a year (I KNOW). I potty trained an adult yorkie, and it took 2-3 months to get him to 99%, and I think that's the most trained he'll ever be. That means that under normal circs he behaves beautifully, but if he is in PetSmart / doggy daycare, he marks. Or if we move furniture, he gets stressed and forgets all his training for a couple days. Of those months, I would say two weeks were spent watching him like a hawk and getting almost nothing else done. Then probably another two-four weeks of watching him regularly, and then the rest of the time just keeping an eye on him. |
Congratulations, I know this this is something to be proud of. Remember if you can keep him at about 90% trained the first 6 months you are doing good, and try not to make a fuss if he makes a mistake, but reward the success. They say anytime they make a mistake, it's really the owner who has made the mistake, and learning what you did wrong can mean many things. Some Yorkies have a setback during teething and when they are neutered, so don't get discouraged if he makes a few mistakes then. Way to go Munchie! |

It's much faster if you crate train them and follow the rules. I was able to crate Joey at night but kept him in a playpen with pee pads during the day, unless I was able to absolutely keep my eye on him. I actually think it's easier for people who work, because they don't hear them cry, when they want out of the crate or playpen, and I could never stand to hear him whine, it broke my heart, so I allowed him out most of the time. If you keep lots of pee pads close, they catch on pretty fast, but they aren't going to walk very far to find one. He learned on the wood floors much faster than he learned on the carpet, because the carpet is so much like a giant pee pad. This site has some excellent tips, on housebreaking, and training them to either go outside or use pee pads. Free House Training for Puppies and Adult Dogs - No More Accidents Starting Today! |
Took us 6-7 months.. and we are not offical yet we are giving it another month. This is with treats for going outside, ignoring inside, crating when unsupervised, and keeping him on a leash and not letting him run around. He used to be so bad he would just start peeing or pooing on the leash when we had just come from outside. I'd of course correct him and take him outside but nothing helped. Thank god the worst is over with. |
