New---Need Housebreaking advise please! Hello, my name is Cassie. I have a 1.5 year old yorkie named Molly. I have had her a little over a month, a lady that I work with wanted to get rid of her, and I took her, I have always wanted a yorkie. This lady said her husband "hated her". I don't see why. She is a very sweet, well behaved dog. I don't think she had her for the right reasons, she said she wanted to start breeding her, but never did. (I plan to have her spayed). Anyways, I have had the hardest time housebreaking her. She had a doggie door where she used to live, and the lady told me "she is just about housebroken". Ha! That had to be a lie! We can get her to pee in our yard, but getting her to poop is like an act of congress! We walk her and walk her. She does like to poop when I take her on walks (long walks) but she only will do it in neighbors yards! She has never gone in our yard. She also likes to go in my kids room. I started putting her in her crate at night b/c we would wake up to in the am. If I put her in her crate while I am at work, she still poops in it. I have tried giving treats and praise after she goes, I don't really know what else to do. We got a terrier mix puppy a week ago, and he is doing much better at house breaking than her! Sorry this is so long, I am just frustrated at this point! Any advise? |
Maybe if you try putting an expen around her crate, leaving the door open and put a pee pee pad in the expen area, she will most likely use the pad to go to the bathroom on as opposed to where she is sleeping... as soon as you have her pee pad trained then you could remove the ex pen.... I never used a crate but give her time it hasnt been that long...;) |
I know as hard as it is to say it is also as hard to do and that is you just have to have patience and use reinforcements! |
I think the xpen idea is a great one. You will be happy she learns to use the pee pad as well as going out. I never used the crate but I don't think it will work for you since she was left it for two long of periods and had to use it to pee and poo in and had no choice. When she pees outside rub the pee pad in it so she gets her own urine scent and she will get the idea in no time. Then you can just put cleans ones down and she will know what they are for. Be sure to praise her and tell her she is a good girl. good luck with Molly (love the name) |
I have two Yorkies and sympathize with you on the housetraining issue. It took almost 8 months for my Sophie to finally get the hang of it. I recommend the book Housetraining for Dummies. It has some really great information and I found it to be very helpful for both of my babies. |
