Training classes Hi everyone! Just wondering if you have put your furbaby in pet training classes ... I'm still not sure if I should put Paco in one? |
i'm planning on it when she's had all her shots done!! everyone i know says it trains you more than her, but we owners need all the help we can get in learning how to teach our pets |
i have not and am not goin to were training mine yorkie by are selfs :) |
im not being cheecky just incase you thought i did :):):):):):) |
I took Maddie to "puppy kindergarten" and it was aweful. It might have just been the place that I went though. She is so tiny and the other dogs are so full of energy it was just a bad mix. The trainer did not give any attention to just one dog. Maddie went to 2 puppy classes at that place and then I pulled her out of it. I would definately see if you could sit in on a class or two for free before you decide to do it so you don't waste your money. I just posted in the training session about a trainer that I hired for private lessons in my home. I'll have to let you know how that goes. Maddie is the first dog I have ever had so the training is more for me than for her. :p |
I am planning to take Thor to obedience school. We're having some "issues" and I need some perspective from a professional. I've heard good things about the ASPCA classes here. Someone I know has three really well trained dogs -- they're not newfies, they're the other kind -- anyway, he enters them in cart pulling contests and stuff like that, and he said he did all his training at the ASPCA. They have two sets of classes, one for regular sized dogs, and one for small. I asked about Thor's safety if we just did a drop in, and they said all the dogs will be really far away from each other. I know that's a lot of info given that I haven't even been to a class yet, but that's what I've got. :) |
Thanks everyone! I think I'll sit in a couple of classes to see how it goes and take it from there! |
I have Lacey in obedience class and we love it. We go to her trainer's house once a week for private lessons and then we're sent home with info to work on what we learned. I do feel like one can easily train these thing's on their own though. I just continue to take her so she can pass the S.T.A.R. puppy with akc. |
I work at Petsmart and we give out all different kinds of classes and i agree with one of the comment we as owners learn ALOT. I think it is good and wortht eh money if you know were your going. I would research were you want to take classes first and ask people who have been there prior to you if they would recomend them. Good luck |
I took Mocha to puppy school when he was about 5-6 months old. I personally wasn't satisfied with the classes, but it could've just been the place I went to. The trainer was clearly partial to large breeds and didn't pay any attention to Mocha, who was the smallest. On the very first day, she even thought he was a Shih-tzu! And she would always refer to him as a girl, even though I corrected her every week. She just didn't seem to like small dogs very much. The class was also full of bigger dogs (Alaskan Malamute, Golden Retriever, etc.). I also think it's where Mocha learned to bark  He used to be quiet as a mouse and never barked, but all the dogs in the class would always bark non-stop. He picked it up soon after attending the classes. It's funny that people think of small dogs as yappy and annoying, but Mocha was the ONLY quiet dog there! All the bigger dogs would constantly bark their heads off! Anyways, I agree with the other poster about observing a class before you make the commitment. Make sure the trainer is aknowledgeable with small breeds and is attentive to them. My trainer always used the bigger dogs when she was showing examples of training techniques. She would also always help the bigger dogs first, and barely spent any time with me and Mocha. Her favourite dog there was the Alaskan Malamute, as she owned several Siberian Husky's herself. 90% of her attention was always on the Malamute. It was very irritating and frustrating to watch her be so biased  |
I took my 3 lb Lucy to Sirius Puppy Class 1 last night :thumbdown. There were 6 dogs in the class. Three of the dogs weighed at least 30 lbs. During puppy play they all took turns pouncing on her then all at once. The trainer said she would let them know when she had enough. I don't agree with this method. A thirty pound dog could crush her ribs or punture her eyes. Needless to say she was traumatized and couldn't concentrate on learning. She would run to a corner when the dogs would approach her. All she wanted was for me to pick her up. She did fine with 2 smaller dogs in her class, and has been socialized with dogs that are owned by friends. I pulled her out of the class because it was not a good experience and I don't want her to be fearful of big dogs. Does anyone know of a class that is geared for small dogs? I am so disappointed.... and I can't seem to find any on the web. Please advise. :thumbdown:cry::shocked7q:exclaim: |
Sadie is currently in her fourth series of classes. We started her with puppy kindergarten. That is the only class that had "playtime". The were very careful and only let like size pups play together. There were a couple of times where the teacher stopped the playtime and changed the mix of puppies so that there wasn't any roughness. It was great! She is the smallest dog that's been in any of her classes but it hasn't been a problem. Other than a very specific playtime during puppy kindergarten they do not allow any interaction between the dogs during class. Having by far the smallest dog in any of her classes I appreciate it. She even had a huge Newfoundland in one class. He looked like a great big black bear! |
