matted coats... Does anyone have any idea on how to get rid of matts? I have tried Cowboy Magic, a seam ripper and brushing lots. My boys still get them. Any ideas???:animal-pa |
Use a good cream rinse and then some leave-in conditioner?????? I never had this issue, just a suggestion. |
I read that you can rub corn meal into the mat and it releases. Have not tried it yet. I have had good luck with Cowboy Magic and a product simply called "The Stuff." I just rub a glob into the mat and then gently pull it apart. I had forgotten about puppy mats but am back in that game now with little Rocky. Those arm pit mats are the worst! I will be glad when he gets his adult hair. |
I have had great luck with Emu Oil. I actually used it on my godchild who's hair was beyond belief matted after having swine flu and no one brushing her thick hair. I got it all out using emu oil and my Chris Christesen pin brush. It really works great on my cottony coated girls. |
I use a leave in conditioner called Summer Winds Protect-A-Coat. On mats I use it straight, (not mixed with water), and gently work it out. I know sometimes they won't stand still long enough for it to be worked out. Before I was liberally using the Summer Winds, I had a boy that got matted as a puppy and I just cut it off. When his hair grew out, he championed 18 months later! When I get home I'll try and get some pictures of him up on YT. CH Alisstar's Southern Son, Sonny. Good luck with your little man's coat. |

Where do you buy your Emu oil from. Rockie gets matted too. He has the cottony coat also. |
I found that the Yorkie coat because the hair is thin and long tends to mat very easily an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure esp in this case Try to brush them out everyday My guys Love getting brushed and they are SO proud when I finish with them and tell them how handsome they look ... lol  |

Just note that when ever your babies have matts. DO NOT put them int eh water. it will make the matts tighter and harder to get out... I brush my baby twice a day sometime sonly once and she would matts if i skip on day. I hope you can get them out and i am sure a groomer would have great suggestion as well.... Goodluck with everything, i know how you feel :) |

Maggie who has a cottony coat in the first place took up gum chewing! She had gum in her legs, lips, beard, what a mess. I called my sis (groomer) in a panic and she said to rub peanut butter into and try to comb out the gum. She said if I could not get it all out, just leave the pb in for awhile and try again. It worked wonderfully. I was sure she would be a matted mess and was not. I even used chunky :D. Next time she matts I am going to try the pb on the matt. I bet it will work (but probably will have to be washed out). |
