Hyperactive puppy!! Help!! hi everyone My 12 week old yorkie puppy seems very hyperactive. Any time i try to pet her or even brush her she goes right for my fingers and hands trying to bite them or the brush. She has lots of energy which is good but there never seems to be a time when she relaxes besides when she is asleep! I am finding this quite stressful (the whole bitting my hand and fingers thing). Do all yorkie puppies behave like this? Is it just a puppy phase that she will grow out of ? She sometimes growls and barks at me aswell if i tell her ''no''! I really want to get her used to me grooming her but she just wont let me brush her as she is constantly trying to bite the brush! please help! |
George would go for my hands but I used a stuffed toy to distract him from my fingers and a stern "no" if it didn't work I just walk away and the brush biting was normal for him too but be persistant, hold him tight, brush gently and they learn with time or brush him when he is sleepy. My boy is 8 months now and just sits quietly now but I wouldn't brush him when he's in play mode it would be a battle. |
We had a HUGE problem with this with Macy. A stern no, and no attention (walk away and dont pay attention to your fur butt) did wonders for us. We went through a good 2 months of nipping. Toys are great for distractions too, but you must first teach them YOU are NOT a TOY. ;) |
same problem lily is 14 wks old. very hyper. if you try to pet her she gets so excited and bites your fingers hands will not let you pet her jumps up to your face chews your nose and when she gives kisses its like she wants to really shew your lips .she will only slow down enough for petting when she is sleeping. then you can kiss and pet her otherwise she goes crazy you can give stern no and she comes right back for the hands. i have noticed if stuff a toy in her mouth i can pet her for a few before she realizes she isnt getting me. the brushing for get it for now i decided its a horrible scene. lol. very very very hyper. |
First of all, your puppy is adorable. Secondly, this is what YT puppies are like. She is just a baby. Emily was awful, brushing her was quite a trick, and she even bit the first groomer. I didn't see it, but I decided to try another groomer. I just kept on being very firm, and correcting every time. She is now just wonderful when I brush her and she is in love with the groomer, including being jealous of the groomer's dog. I am convinced though, that for the first few months she thought her name was "No" because she heard it so often. |
most all puppys act that way its completely normal |

My Cali was like that and I seriously thought she was possessed at times. She would lunge at me try and biting me. I would just tell her no and stop playing with her. She matured in to the sweetest of my girls. Just hang in there they settle down. |

After reading these posts I'm wondering about Karlee...she is very laid back, loves to sleep or curl up in our laps she is not at all hyper in anyway. When we play with her it takes a bit to get her rilled up and when she is biting a toy she will stop as soon as she sees our hands near her. If we tell her no she will stop altogether and just sit and look at us until we say her name...we've had her 4 days and I was a little worried that she was too laid back is this normal for a 14 week old pup to be so laid back and she sleeps a lot...just wondered? I love her nature but do wish she'd play a little more. Today we seen a little more interaction with her so it may just be she needs to warm up to us a little more???? |
hyperactive reading this thread i relate to all of it! .I've had my pup 3 wks and she is now 10 1/2 wks old. For the first week she acted like your saying, quiet placid, all cuddly just wanted to be on your lap etc. By the second wk she was getting more adventurous & lively and now after 3 wks she has definately settled in, very playful and active but also still very loving and wants her cuddles when tired or after i've been out. Regarding grooming her, i have just started these last couple of days and she does mainly just want to bite the brush and me but i let her lick & bite the brush for a couple of minutes then give her a couple of brushes & she lets me so i keep telling her 'good girl'. I'm doing this a couple of times for a few minutes each day, that way i think she will gradually get used to it without stress. If she tries to bite me i say a sharp 'no bite' move my hand away & give her a toy she's allowed to chew. If she chews the toy i say' good girl' but if she still ytries to bite i put her straight down & ignore her. In the 3 wks i've had her i'm already seeing a definate improvement in her biting, she is learning. So i agree with everyone else, its normal puppy behaviour but she must be taught it's not acceptable beacause an adult biting dog is not cute.:):) |

My 15 week old puppy can be very hyper too. What has been working for me is a stern no and then ignoring her. The nipping at your fingers is her way of telling you she wants to play (thats how they get their littermates to play with them). When Dolly wants to play she has to sit before I will play with her...if she bites I do not play with her. She is learning that biting does not get her play time and having her sit before we play helps to get her in a bit of a clamer state. |
