Help, new puppy Hi everyone, I'm a "newbee" to this sight, as I am to new to EVER HAVING A PUPPY. I am disabled with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus. My cat of 17 years just passed. So all my friends came out of the woodword and raised the $1,300 for my new Yorkie, Sushi. I don't have her yet. I will be picking her up August 18th. I feel OVERWELMED with all the start-up things I need for her. So I thought you guys could help me. I mentioned my disabilities because she will be INDOOR TRAINED only. I cannot count on my legs to go on walks and the disease is not responding to medication. So I purchased the wee wee pad that you can wash like 259 times, and it brings two. I bought a bed, playpen, pin brush, Nylabones, purse type carrier (do I need anything more than a purse?), some toys. Also I will be socializing her through puppy classes. I know how important socializing her is. But my breeder is a believer in never letting them go on the grass. So Sushi is already trained with newspaper. ANY ADVICE YOU CAN GIVE ME ON ANYTHING WOULD BE ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. Thank you so much!!:) |
Congratulations on your expected arrival, iyou didn't mention food, otherwise you mentioned pretty much everything. Are you going to be able to have someone walk the furbaby for you?:animal36 wlecometo yt |
Hello and welcome to YT!!! Congratulations on your new puppy! Can't wait to see pictures when you get it. The only thing that I wonder about is exercise. Is there going to be a way for it to get exercise by you or someone else? |
:D Welcome to YT and congrats on your new baby ! There is a wonderful thread on YT that will help you pick a food ,although you should probably stick with what your breeder is feeding for now. |
I have to get the food the breeder is feeding her. I will be walking her but when I'm ready. That's why I want her to be indoor trained. I have a dog park near me so when she's a little older and it gets a little cooler in Florida I have this option. Thank you. |
How much exercise does a Yorkie need per day? I have a big apartment? |
First, welcome to YT, and I love the name you have chosen! Sushi is adorable! I don't know what weight Sushi will be when you first get her, but it would be a good idea to pick up some Nutri Cal for Puppies. Nutri Cal Puppy Supplement Yorkies have a tendency to get hypoglocemic when they get over exerted, empty bellies, etc. You can pick it up at any pet supply store even Walmart and Target usually carry it. Even though you are going to start out with what the breeder feeds, you might want to go ahead and research dog foods and definitely learn about the grain free kibbles. I couldn't have raised my three through puppyhood without this forum. You will find many well educated people on this board that are willing to help you though any situation you might encounter with your new pup. Contratulations and best of luck to you and Sushi! |

One of the great things about a Yorkie is that they can get most of the exercise they need in an apartment - chasing a ball, playing with their toys, etc. Samantha will even take the ball and run all over the apartment before bringing it back if I don't throw it far enough. Also, Samantha is indoor trained. She normally uses her place in the bathroom. The streets are not safe in Cairo and there are no dog parks. Even the club near where we live is not safe for various reasons. However, Samantha goes to day care one day a week at the kennel where she was trained. She can run and play with other small dogs with constant supervision. She even gets to play with her best friend, Figo, a lab who lives across the street and down one balcony from us, when they are there at the same time. She is a happy, healthy, six year old bundle of joy who gets along well with both people and other dogs. On the other hand, she firmly believes that one of her purposes in life is to terrorize cats. :p |
