Confidence I searched the forums and couldn't find anything, but I hope someone has had the same issue and found an answer. My Capone has no confidence in hisself. If I go to pick him up from his xpen he just balls up like hes been abused or something (not the case at all). He is 9 months old. He has done this pretty much the whole time I've had him. If another dog comes around he will sniff them and try to play but a few seconds later hes balled up or running away. My neighbor has a small dog and we share a fence with them and if that dog is out Capone freaks out. He will slowly go to the fence then run away as fast as possible. I've read to do things like let him win tug of war and praise him for doing tricks and stuff like that, but I don't think it's working. Please help if anyone has had this problem. |
Are you walking your dog daily? Is he scare when meeting people too? |
It sounds like his little spirit has been broken ! He hasn't had any bad experiences with any other people or animals has he ! I really don't know what to do except keep introducing him to other animals and people, if he sees that your comfortable around them maybe he will want to join in ! Mine is the opposite, he tries to intimidate any living creature he comes in contact with, from bugs to humans, he doesn't care ! Good Luck ! |
I would just expose him to different people and different dogs. Take him on alot of walks so hes exposed to different situations. Now saying that I have a female that will cower and we have never even spoke harshly to her. She is also a nervous dog so I think that is alot of it. Anyway I have did all that with her and she does seem somewhat better although she is still a nervous dog. I got her when she was 8 wweeks so it might be because she was taken from her mom too young |

How old is he? He might be going through a fear stage. Some dogs are naturally shy. I would break the individual behaviors out and address them separately. For instance, bending over to pick him up: this is a threatening position for dogs. Many dogs get used to it, but they have overcome their first instinct. Try approaching him in a (to him) less threatening manner. You can also desensitize him to it by bending over him and throwing him a treat. Similarly, with dogs, praise him a lot when approaching dogs, and reward him if he acts even a little bit more brave. Be careful when treating him around other dogs, since other dogs may feel that they deserve treats too! |
Oh, I see that he is 9 months old. That IS a fear stage, I think. So keep taking him places and gently introducing him to new things. Also, consider taking him to obedience class -- the trainer may be able to give you some insight as well. |
Maybe he is just still nervous about things in general. He hates the car too. He tries to lay in my lap but obviously I can't drive like that. He will occasionally peek his head up but drops it right back down. His body is so tense the whole ride. He freaks out as soon as he sees me heading towards the car and pulls back. I try to give him treats to lure him to the car and while hes in the car but it doesn't work. Anybody know how to fix that? I want him to be my road dog :). |
Hmmmm. Maybe just spend some time hanging out in the car without driving it. Let him jump in and out of the car, have a nice blanket for him to sit on, you could even feed him some meals in there. Then drive around the block, stop and treat. Etc. I know what you mean about them trying to sit in your lap while driving. :) I finally got Thor a booster seat, so he's strapped in, AND now he can see out the window. |
Get down on the floor, do things at his level, he might not feel as threatened. When i do this with Alfie he is a totally different dog. |
